Job description
Overview

The School of Engineering, College of Science & Engineering invites applications for a Mechanical Engineering Technician to join its Technical Services team. The appointee will primarily provide technical support to the School’s Composites Research Group and will be involved in the day-to-day running and organisation of the Group’s laboratories, manufacturing components and apparatus, maintaining and servicing equipment, and training staff, students and other technicians. This is a full-time, open-ended position.

Grade: UE06
Salary: £28,331 to £32,816
Hours: 35 hours per week

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support to the Composites Research Group and manage the day-to-day running of the Group’s laboratories.
  • Manufacture components and apparatus using the School’s facilities, including manual and CNC lathes and milling machines, 3D printing and laser-cutting equipment.
  • Maintain and service equipment; assist with prototype manufacturing and provide training to staff, students, and other technicians.
  • Contribute to design work using CAD software (e.g., FeatureCAM, AutoCAD) and develop design skills as required.
Qualifications
  • Educated to HNC/HND level (or equivalent, which may have been acquired as part of a recognised apprenticeship) in relevant subjects (e.g., manufacturing, mechanical engineering).
  • Significant experience in an engineering environment (at least 3 years).
  • Mechanical skills with well-developed manufacturing capabilities and a willingness to develop new skills as required.
  • Highly motivated with excellent interpersonal skills and a strong commitment to Continuing Professional Development.
