Job description
Overview

ITM Power – Location: Sheffield. Direct applications only – No agency applicants at this time.

ITM is at the forefront of the green hydrogen industry, designing and manufacturing cutting-edge PEM electrolysers that support global decarbonisation efforts. With over two decades of scientific expertise, we are a leader in clean energy technology.

About ITM Power
ITM is a pioneer in green hydrogen technology. Founded in 2000, ITM Power PLC was one of the first of its kind listed on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange. The company operates a manufacturing facility that is the world’s first largest PEM Gigafactory in commercial operation, and houses R&D and manufacturing. ITM Power Germany serves as our EU hub, housing regional functions, aftersales services, and the ability to quickly deploy stacks.

Innovation and Impact
Our PEM electrolysers are deployed in some of the world’s largest green hydrogen projects, and we continue to push technology boundaries to improve cost-effectiveness and sustainability.

Join Our Mission
ITM is in a transformative phase focused on streamlined delivery and operational excellence. We seek talented individuals who share our passion for clean energy and our drive to contribute to the world’s transition to net-zero. You will work with an inspiring team that supports each other to excel, and you’re invited to join us on the next step of our journey.

What are we looking for

We are seeking a mid-level to senior mechanical engineer with experience in the process industry and proven industry skills. You will join the Equipment Engineering department, working on various process equipment packages for the production of green hydrogen. Process equipment packages comprise components that collectively achieve a specified function within a process system (e.g., water purification, sea-water injection, desalination, crude oil distillation, etc.). To maintain functionality, performance and reliability, every component within the package (e.g., pump, compressor, valve, pressure vessel, electric motor, instrument, control system) must be specified accordingly.

Responsibilities

  • Complete ownership of various multidisciplinary units/equipment procured to build the system and sub-system packages
  • Ensure units/equipment selected are verified, certified, qualified, meet all statutory obligations, and are fit for purpose for the life expectancy of the packaged system based on the contractual agreement
  • Prepare technical documentation (datasheets and specifications) of equipment to support proposals, FEED, detailed engineering and prototype test rigs
  • Interact with internal project teams, procurement, compliance, quality, and other engineering disciplines; externally with clients, vendors, and suppliers; participate in bid clarification meetings
About You

Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • 5+ years’ experience handling package units (e.g., chemical process packages, cooling towers, water treatment packages, material handling systems, compressor packages)
  • Competent with industry standards and ability to perform calculations to BS, EN, ISO, ASME, API, etc.
  • Good understanding of ATEX directives, PED, and Machinery Directive
  • Ability to review supplier documentation (ITPs, FATs, SATs, test reports, mill certificates, product certifications)
  • Experience in design, selection and specification of process system equipment (pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, pipework, valves, fittings)
  • Ability to interpret and produce engineering documentation (P&IDs, PFDs, engineering drawings, performance graphs, datasheets, specifications)
  • Understanding of material selection for industrial applications
  • Ability to evaluate parts and processes for cost, efficiency and reliability improvements
  • Knowledge of risk analysis tools such as FMEA/DFMEA
  • Understanding of safety, compliance, statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Willingness to travel internationally to sites and vendors’ workshops

Highly advantageous

  • Experience in EPC oil and gas, chemical, or industrial gases process plants
  • Chartered (CEng) status or working toward it
  • Solid 3D CAD skills (ideally SolidWorks)
  • Experience with FEA analysis using ANSYS Mechanical
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 Quality Management System
  • Awareness of EC&I requirements for packaged equipment and pump systems
  • Familiarity with manufacturing environments including BOMs and MRP
  • Knowledge of engineering systems and processes (change notes, NCRs, etc.)

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, report writing and presentation skills
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making abilities
