Major Trauma Patient Liaison Practitioner

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our team as a Major Trauma Patient Liaison Practitioner (MTPLP). This pivotal role will be instrumental in establishing a holistic support service for patients and their families/carers throughout their major trauma journey.

The MTPLP will be fully integrated within the Major Trauma Service (MTS), providing personalised information, emotional and practical support and advocacy within the multidisciplinary team. You will help ensure that patients and families receive high-quality legal and financial guidance, aligning with the service philosophy and Cardiff and Vale UHB policies. This includes collaborative working with our legal partner to ensure access to specialist advice.

Main duties of the job

The South Wales Major Trauma Network was established to enhance care and outcomes for patients experiencing major trauma. At the heart of this network is the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) as the designated Major Trauma Centre (MTC), delivering specialist care and rehabilitation for patients with complex injuries.

The Major Trauma Patient Liaison Practitioner (MTPLP) will play a pivotal role dedicated to providing holistic support for patients and their families/carers during their journey. UHW is the Major Trauma Centre (MTC) for the South Wales Trauma Network (SWTN). The MTPLP will support the collaborative delivery of the MTC Advice Service. The role will be fully integrated within the Major Trauma Service and focusing on ensuring that patients and families/carers are provided with personalised information, emotional and practical support.

The MTPLP will offer compassionate care and advocate for the needs of patients and families/carers. In addition, the MTPLP will support the Major Trauma Directorate ensuring that there are effective and efficient clinical governance mechanisms in place, particularly in respect of clinical risk management and patient safety incidents. Under the direction of the Directorate Management Team, the MTPLP will ensure all patient safety incident reports, claims and concerns are investigated as appropriate in line with UHB processes, with a focus on lessons learnt.

You will be part of a dynamic team within the MTS providing support and advice to major trauma patients across the areas of Polytrauma Unit, Critical Care, Spinal Injuries Unit, Surgery and Medicine. The MTPLP will offer compassionate support and will advocate for the needs of patients and families/carers, developing a robust resource to signpost to the most appropriate services and third sector partners.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
  • Professional registration with relevant governing body e.g. NMC, HCPC
  • Educated to MSc level in a relevant healthcare associated subject or evidence of equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continued professional development
