Job description

The University of Southampton requires a full time Maintenance Operative - Multi-trade to join the Estates and Facilities Department to undertake a variety of Building trade related tasks across our academic campuses supporting the academic and business needs of the organisation. This role will be 40 hours per week, Mon-Friday.

Role Overview

As a Multi-Trade Technician, you will undertake a variety of maintenance and repair tasks across multiple trades, including carpentry, decoration, wet trades including electrical, and general building maintenance. You will ensure that campus facilities operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulations, contributing to an optimal environment for learning and working.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance, minor work and repairs across multiple trades, including patch plastering, painting, basic carpentry, re-pointing, roofing repairs and leak detection, and other general maintenance
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot faults in building fabric and external landscapes to ensure minimal disruption to campus operations.
  • Carry out general building maintenance tasks, such as painting, plastering, and tiling.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and inspections.
  • Respond promptly to emergency maintenance issues, including out-of-hours support as needed.
  • Collaborate with other trade teams and external contractors on larger repair or installation projects.
  • Uphold high standards of health and safety, adhering to all relevant regulations and guidelines.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
  • Recognised trade qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 3 in at least one of the following disciplines: Decorating, Bricklaying, Roofing, Plastering, Carpentry, or equivalent multi-trade certification).
  • Proven experience in multiple trades, preferably in a commercial, or live public environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills for coordinating with colleagues and contractors.
  • Valid full UK driver’s license and participation in an out of hours Call out rota are essential
Desirable Qualifications and Skills
  • Experience working in a university, hospital, or large campus environment
