Role Overview

The Maintenance Manager will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running, safety, and upkeep of the Bodmin Jail Museum and its grounds. This role requires a hands‑on, proactive individual with broad practical skills across multiple trades, including gardening, woodwork, electrics, plumbing, and general building maintenance. The successful candidate will have excellent attention to detail and a strong sense of pride in maintaining a historic and visitor‑facing site.

Key Responsibilities
  • Daily Maintenance & Upkeep
    • Carry out routine inspections of the museum, grounds, and facilities.
    • Perform day‑to‑day repairs, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and general building upkeep.
    • Maintain cleanliness and presentation standards in public and back‑of‑house areas.
  • Gardening & Grounds Care
    • Ensure gardens, pathways, and external spaces are well maintained, safe, and visually appealing.
    • Undertake seasonal planting, pruning, weeding, and lawn care.
  • Installations & Projects
    • Assist with setting up exhibitions, displays, and installations.
    • Support with event preparations and dismantling when required.
    • Carry out “making good” tasks after installations or maintenance work.
  • Health, Safety & Compliance
    • Proactively identify and address potential hazards and maintenance issues.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety regulations.
    • Carry out basic risk assessments for tasks as required.
  • Teamwork & Support
    • Work closely with the Operations to ensure a high‑quality visitor environment.
    • Provide maintenance support during events, tours, and seasonal activities.
