Overview

Maintenance Assistant – Locations: Smallfield and Effingham, Surrey. Contract: Full-time, Permanent. Salary: £27,019.20 – £27,768 dependent on experience. Hours: 40 per week, Monday to Friday, including 3pm – 8pm, with an additional 3 hours per day candidate choice. Employer: Aurora Surrey. You will be based at Redehall School in Smallfield and Poppyfield School in Effingham and will be responsible for ensuring ongoing operation, grounds and equipment are maintained to provide a high-quality site service, safeguarding, health and safety for all on site.

You will work with the Premises Manager and contribute to the development of services through site expansion projects and integrating new or developed buildings. The schools serve students aged 6–16 years with communication and social interaction difficulties, typically associated with Autism. Redehall School and Poppyfield School share the same Principal; sites operate separately but staff and students cross between sites.

Key Duties
  • Deliver all activities with an energy-efficient approach and ethos.
  • Respond to and resolve ad hoc maintenance requests via online ticketing software.
  • Organise and carry out the collection and movement of furniture and equipment as directed.
  • Ensure all fire and safety equipment and systems are functional and that safety awareness is promoted.
  • Ensure all relevant procedures and checks are completed in accordance with policy.
  • Support the Annual Fire Risk Assessment process.
  • Brief visitors and contractors on fire safety requirements, and ensure contractors are briefed in detail of requirements to avoid fire risks.
  • Carry out monthly vehicle check audits and report any concerns.
  • Ensure the safe storage of tools, equipment and the equipment register; manage storage of materials and paints in line with manufacturers’ instructions.
  • Attend work reliably and punctually and maintain a good corporate image.
  • Build and maintain good relationships with staff, students and stakeholders.
  • Carry out regular planned maintenance inspections on services, utilities and building fabric; report findings and take necessary actions.
  • Carry out any additional tasks and responsibilities instructed by the Premises Manager as required.
  • Maintain school grounds to an acceptable standard; ensure buildings are fit for purpose to provide a suitable education environment.
  • Note: duties may vary and you will be expected to contribute to the overall aims of the schools when required.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Flexibility and sensitivity to the needs of a wide range of users with complex needs.
  • Understanding and application of legislation and regulations relating to site management (e.g., fire, health and safety, Legionella, asbestos, security, COSHH, safeguarding within a college/school environment).
  • Competent in basic building repairs and maintenance and grounds maintenance; ability to effectively delegate and monitor work of others.
  • Computer literacy essential due to internal CAFM system usage.
  • Knowledge of current Health & Safety regulations; Health and Safety qualification desirable.
  • Ability to liaise with staff at all levels of technical knowledge; enthusiastic, proactive and involved.
  • General maintenance knowledge, preferably with a qualification in electrics/plumbing or a construction trade.
  • Customer service and problem-solving approach.
