A major player in the Energy Sector is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for a site-based role in Bridgwater, UK. The successful candidate will join a team supporting the review and acceptance of engineering queries in a highly regulated environment. This contract position is renewable and requires experience in heavy mechanical power generation equipment and strong communication skills. Candidates must also have a relevant degree. Working three days on site and two remotely is expected.

Location: Site based office attendance minimum 3 days per week AND 2 days remote working

Status: Contract (renewable) - INSIDE IR35

Reports to: Engineering Lead

Morson Edge are working on behalf of a major player within the Energy Sector who have a current requirement for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join their client's established site-based team in Somerset. This is a (renewable) contract position - inside IR35.

The successful candidate will comprise part of a wider, multi-national Joint Design Office team responsible for supporting Review and Acceptance of design activities of a classified plant. This dynamic and multi-disciplinary design team undertake the important intelligent customer role on behalf of the Project.

The Joint Design Office (JDO) has been created to reinforce site-based engineering to quickly respond to engineering queries/problems coming from site construction to deliver the schedule and to deliver an increased scope of work. By being located close to the construction works the JDO team are able to quickly react and provide technical solutions/answers - thereby crucially assisting construction teams swiftly and efficiently.

Overview

The M&E Engineer (Mechanical) will support and contribute to the review and acceptance of engineering queries raised by the site Contractor on the Equipment scope across the Conventional Island / Balance of Plant and Nuclear Island buildings. The role will be focussed on the Turnkey discipline — dealing with various Turnkey contractors delivering in both the NI and CI/BoP areas but will interface with other disciplines and with several parties such as the site Contractors (composed of main suppliers and sub-suppliers), Construction teams, Quality teams, Project Management teams, or Design teams (embedded within the JDO on site or in the back office).

Key Responsibilities
  • Responding to General Queries, Non-Conformances, Change Requests and Exemption Requests with the support of the Responsible Designer or site Experts when needed.
  • Challenging design decisions so that engineering and design aligns with the project strategy.
  • Providing adequate oversight to ensure the Nuclear Safety and Environmental Regulation requirements are met.
  • Assist in co‑ordinating support from other external organisations.
  • Contribute to the resolution and closure of Open Points.
  • Assess technical risk and subsequently addressing this risk.
  • Building and maintaining a strong relationship with the Responsible Designer and regulatory bodies.
Skills and experience
  • Typically degree or higher degree in relevant discipline
  • Experience of Equipment design, installation and/or commissioning
  • Experience of working within a highly regulated working environment and knowledge of associated Health & Safety legislation (CDM etc).
  • Experience of working in the design and maintenance of heavy mechanical power generation equipment
  • Experience in the understanding of welding engineering (desirable)
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers
