Job description
Overview

This is a fixed term locum Consultant post to cover sabbatical. The remit of the postholder will be to work within the multi-disciplinary team providing and further developing care for obstetrics and gynaecology, especially Gyn Oncology services, and to provide and develop Women’s services to the Trust's Gynaecology patients. The individual will also play an active role in the general workload of the Care Group while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

Main duties of the job
  1. Together with the other Consultants to provide obstetrics and gynaecology services for women attending King’s College Hospital. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties required for the proper functioning of the department.
  2. Shared responsibility with the other Consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for the Obstetrics and Gynaecology on-call rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness/absence.
  3. Manage women in high risk obstetrics clinics and One Stop Gynaecology Clinics.
  4. Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  5. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
  6. To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.
  7. To contribute to the Audit Programme.
  8. To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Group's Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
  9. To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for Women’s services.

Locum Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology: Special interest in oncology

Full-time 10 PAs. An exciting opportunity to join the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and affiliated sites. Applications are invited for a full-time locum Consultant (10 PAs) in Obstetrics & Gynaecology Directorate at King’s College Hospital at PRUH site. This post will cover for one year sabbatical leave starting from Nov 2025. The post-holder is expected to undertake work mainly at PRUH and South sites to complement the current Oncology Lead Consultant. The post involves both Obstetrics and Gynaecology activities and includes duties as deputy to the oncology lead and performing surgeries for oncology patients.

As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients.

Qualifications

  • Registerable medical qualification
  • MRCOG or equivalent
  • Wide experience in all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, culminating in award of Certificate of Completion of Training by GMC, or completed portfolio pathway application

Desirable

  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)
  • Gynaecology Oncology operating experience or ATSM

Registration

  • Full registration with GMC
  • Within six months of the expected date of CCT (or equivalent) on the day of interview

Training and Experience

  • Wide experience in all aspects of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, culminating in award of CCT or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Evidence of experience of working in a high-risk and busy labour ward

Administration

  • Experience in day to day organisation of services in a busy Teaching Hospital

Desirable

  • Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes

Management and Leadership

  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Management course and/or qualification

Audit & quality improvement

  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit and quality improvement. Must be able to demonstrate ability to lead change.

Research

  • Interest in participating in research
  • Understanding of research and critical appraisal.

Teaching

  • Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation.
