Locum Consultant in Orthodontics

We are looking to appoint a 5.5 PA Locum Consultant Orthodontist Post with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH) NHS Foundation Trust based at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital (CCDH). This appointment is for an initial 12 months.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work for 5.5 PAs will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with Orthodontic Consultant colleagues.

Should any further vacancies arise, shortlisted applicants will be considered.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with their Consultant colleagues, be responsible for the:

  • Delivery of routine and complex orthodontic treatment for residents of Sheffield and surrounding areas.
  • Delivery of multidisciplinary clinical skills to complement complex specialist treatment already provided in the department. This will include, but is not limited to, having an MDT approach to the management of orthognathic patients on joint OMFS–Orthodontic clinics, and hypodontia clinics.
  • Clinical training and supervision of postgraduate students, StRs and Post‑CCST trainees within the Dental Hospital and on external courses including the Northern Universities Consortium (NUC) programme.
  • Clinical training and supervision of Orthodontic Therapists.
  • Teaching of dental undergraduates and hygiene and therapy students across all 5 or 2 years of their studies, respectively, and participation in undergraduate university examinations, elective programme, personal tutee programme and interviews as required.
  • Conduct of their clinical practice in accordance with the principles of sound clinical governance and will take a full part in the Trust's clinical governance activities.
  • Commitment to continuing medical education and appraisal.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Full and Specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Dental Council (GDC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview. If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • MFDS or FDSRCS plus FDS (Orth) or equivalent.
  • Name on the GDC Specialist list in Orthodontics.
  • SAC approved training in Orthodontics leading to Accreditation, or equivalent for other EEA nationals. SAC approved Fixed‑Term Training Appointment in Orthodontics leading to attainment of Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exam FDS (Orth) or equivalent for other EEA nationals.
  • Distinctions, prizes, awards, scholarships, higher degrees, eg: MClin Dent
Clinical Governance and Audit
  • Experience in performing clinical audit
  • Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project

  • The applicant must demonstrate skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking the English language that enables effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out in the GMC's good medical practice (2013).
Management and Administration
  • Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management.
Continuous Professional Development
  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio
Teaching and training
  • Experience of teaching student dentists and dentists in training at all levels.
  • Presentations/ teaching delivered at regional/ national/ international level
  • Evidence of teaching qualifications.
Research
  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate.
  • Interest in contributing to research.
  • Ability to support trainees in completing research and publication of research.
  • Publications in peer‑reviewed journals
Clinical Experience
  • Ability to work as an independent practitioner in the specialty covered by the post.
  • Possess broad clinical experience in the general aspects of the post plus specific experience in managing and treating complex multidisciplinary cases.
  • Interest in multidisciplinary orthodontic care, with specific focus on (but not limited to) joint orthognathic and joint restorative care.
  • Experience in personal treatment of complex multidisciplinary cases to a high standard.
