An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join our dynamic friendly Dermatology team as a Senior Nurse. Experience in dermatology, Photodynamic Therapy and assisting in minor surgery is desirable.
The Surrey Lead Dermatology Nurse will demonstrate a commitment to quality patient care through effective leadership and team working and will work at all times in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Code of professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines. The Surrey Lead Dermatology Nurse will exhibit the company’s Values and Behaviours and will model the way for others to demonstrate these in their practice.
This role is multidimensional and requires the post holder to assume responsibility for effectively clinically leading a small team, providing advice, information and support; alongside actively supporting the Nurse Manager in the safe and efficient management of the clinics. The job purpose is to ensure a high-quality standard of effective patient centred care is performed and delivered, achieved through assessment of care needs, developing, implementing and evaluating programmes of care to meet the needs of the patient and their families/carers.
Responsibilities
- Strive for continuous improvements in the delivery of high-quality patient-focused care.
- Participate within the team, including the delegation of work to junior staff on a day-to-day basis.
- Plan and manage skill mix to reflect workload and meet patient needs, including using the e-rostering system effectively.
- Act as clinical expert providing specialist knowledge and advice to nurses and medical staff in the clinic.
- Be the named clinical expert on shift for the continuing care of patients in clinic.
- Organise own workload and support staff to time manage and prioritise.
About us
Sussex Community Dermatology Service (SCDS) is a busy community dermatology service covering Coastal West Sussex, Surrey, Horsham, Mid Sussex and West Kent. The clinical team includes Consultant Dermatologists, GPwSIs, registered nurses and healthcare assistants. The service aims to see and treat patients at their initial appointment to minimise follow-up visits. Services include day surgery, minor operations, patch testing, photodynamic therapy, phototherapy and private clinics.

Job description
Responsibilities include:
- Organise own workload and support staff to time manage and prioritise.
- Maintain appropriate clinical and professional insight to acknowledge own boundaries and limitations.
- Work within the Nursing and Midwifery Council codes of practice.
- Participate in developing and delivering a philosophy of care that respects the rights of patients, carers and staff.
- Lead by example, motivate and empower others; maintain positive working relationships within the department and across professional boundaries.
- Identify and manage conflicts to promote a healthy working environment.
- In the Nurse Manager’s absence, maintain staff records (sickness, annual leave) and take appropriate action as necessary.
- Assist in orientation/induction of new staff and medical staff.
- Deal with emergency situations effectively and professionally.
- Assist with the patient advice line, providing expert telephone advice following procedures (e.g., wound care post-surgery or laser therapy).
- Ensure nursing practices comply with company policies and maintain high standards.
- Assist Nurse Manager with clinical governance, investigations of complaints and incidents, and evidence-based practice improvements.
- Respond to patient, relative and carer concerns as they arise.
- Contribute to risk management, audits, incident reporting and investigation.
- Support performance review processes and foster high morale among staff and patients.
- Provide feedback to the Nurse Manager on staff progression and concerns; develop a personal development plan.
- Attend staff meetings as requested and travel to community clinics across Surrey as required.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- First level Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
Experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of outpatient processes and procedures
- Experience in wound care
- Excellent customer service and communication skills, with the ability to interact sensitively with patients
- Experience using email and MS Office
- Ability to work under pressure and manage own workload
- Flexible and proactive team player with ability to work independently
- Full, clean driving licence and use of own car
Desirable
- General nursing experience
- Knowledge of CQC and national care standards
- Knowledge of Clinical Governance
- Experience with clinical software systems (SystemOne, EMIS Web, or Choose and Book)
- Previous dermatology experience
- Experience using electronic patient records and good IT skills
