Job description
Overview

The post holder will work as part of a team to provide an effective, safe environment of care for individual patients, their relatives and carers. Responsibilities include assessment of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of care programmes, and deputising in the absence of the Ward Manager. The role also involves teaching and supervising junior staff, contributing to a patient-centred nursing service aligned with the Trust's Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery.

Responsibilities
  • Assess care needs and develop, implement, and evaluate programmes of care without supervision.
  • Act as the designated deputy to the Ward Manager and deputise in their absence.
  • Teach, supervise and mentor junior and unqualified staff and maintain a learning environment.
  • Provide a patient-centred nursing service on the ward to achieve high standards of care delivery.
  • Coordinate daily ward activity to utilise human and other resources effectively and liaise with the Clinical Site Manager, Senior Nurses, Lead Nurse, Matron, Ward Manager, Medical team or on-call medical team to facilitate overall ward management.
  • Manage emergencies professionally and debrief staff where appropriate.
  • Work with the ward manager to promote an effective learning environment and lead continuous practice development in designated areas. Specialisms include frailty care, care of older people, end of life care and dementia care.
  • Supervise, teach and act as a role model and mentor for staff; communicate practical skills.
  • Identify training needs through appraisal processes and participate in Band 6 development programmes.
  • Assist in recruitment, selection and retention of staff, organise orientation/induction and adaptation programmes, and manage bank and agency time sheets.
  • Monitor sickness and absence in accordance with Trust policy in collaboration with the Ward Manager.
Ward and role specifics
  • Ward B8 is a 24-bed ward within acute frailty at RSCH, caring for acutely ill, often very frail patients with underlying chronic conditions. The ward offers opportunities to gain experience in general nursing and develop a broad range of nursing skills.
  • The candidate must be able to work well under pressure and possess strong interpersonal, communication and IT skills.
  • As a Band 6 on the ward, you will gain leadership skills to lead shifts and support and develop the team to deliver optimal clinical care.
  • We offer flexible working options and contracts; applicants with UK NMC registration are welcomed. Overseas applicants requiring sponsorship are not currently being directly hired.
