Job description

Overview

Design, develop and support secure Java-based solutions underpinning a complex defence system. Own the full software lifecycle – from user needs to deployment, operation and continuous improvement – in a collaborative, high‑performance environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver clean, secure, well‑tested software aligned with modern standards
• Lead and support system operation, monitoring and fault resolution in live environments
• Collaborate and influence across disciplines to shape effective technical solutions
• Improve and optimise system resilience, stability and performance
• Coordinate and support build, integration and testing activities
• Coach and mentor junior team members, sharing knowledge and best practice

Qualifications

• Strong commercial experience in Java development
• Significant experience installing and configuring web technologies, including Apache and Solr
• Experience with proxy server configuration
• Strong understanding of JSON data structures and RESTful web services
• Experience authoring XSL/XSLT and working extensively with XML
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Server OS, including Hyper‑V
• Experience with requirements engineering and testing techniques
• Ability to use mapping tools such as Altova MapForce
• Experience creating lightweight user interfaces using HTML/CSS
• Experience with Oracle Forms, Reports, PL/SQL and SVN
• Familiarity with tools such as NetBeans, TOAD, JDeveloper and TortoiseSVN
• Experience working in both Windows and Unix environments
• Exposure to additional languages such as C++ or .NET Framework
