A leading not-for-profit organisation based in North London seeks a Payroll Manager for a 12-month maternity cover contract. The role involves managing end-to-end payroll for a multi-site workforce, ensuring compliance with payroll legislation and supervising a Payroll Assistant. The ideal candidate will have significant payroll experience, strong Excel skills, and knowledge of relevant legislation. Hybrid working applies after initial training in the office.

Qualifications

Robertson Bell are pleased to be supporting a leading not-for-profit organisation in their search for a Payroll Manager to join on a 12-month maternity cover contract. This is an excellent opportunity to take ownership of a busy payroll function and deliver a high-quality service across both permanent and flexible staffing groups.

The Role

  • Manage end-to-end monthly payroll for a large, multi-site workforce, including flexible/bank staff.
  • Oversee timesheet inputs and process through a computerised payroll system.
  • Ensure compliance with HMRC, RTI submissions, auto-enrolment, and year-end reporting.
  • Prepare payroll journals, reconciliations, and liaise closely with HR on starters, leavers, and variable pay.
  • Supervise and support a Payroll Assistant, whilst remaining hands-on with payroll delivery.

The Person

We are looking for a confident and technically strong payroll professional who can work independently and quickly adapt. You will bring:

  • Significant experience managing end-to-end payrolls of similar size/complexity.
  • Knowledge of payroll legislation, pensions, RTI, and auto-enrolment.
  • Proficiency with computerised payroll systems.
  • Strong Excel and reporting skills, with the ability to explain payroll matters clearly to non-specialists.
  • Supervisory experience is helpful but not essential – accuracy and independence are key.

Working Arrangements

  • This role is based in North London.
  • Hybrid working applies with three days per week in the office.
  • During the first two months, the successful candidate will be expected to work five days per week in the office to support a smooth handover and induction.
