Job description
This role

You will have the opportunity to work at the heart of major infrastructure projects at all stages of inception through to planning applications and construction. The GUC will be the first project to be delivered, with a planned completion in 2032. The project will utilise the canal infrastructure to transfer treated wastewater from Severn Trent's wastewater recycling centre at Minworth in the Midlands, to Affinity Water customers in the Southeast, who we predict will experience a water deficit by 2032. The project is at a critical stage, having completed its first non-statutory consultation in Autumn 2024, and with work progressing through the RAPID scheme, a statutory consultation planned for early 2026, followed by the Development Consent Order (DCO) application to the Planning Inspectorate.

The Infrastructure Projects Lawyer will provide a pivotal role, including:

  • Working closely on a day-to-day basis with the SRO team, providing robust and strategic advice on all legal aspects of the project with support from technical expertise and external solicitors to further the delivery of the GUC and other SRO projects;
  • To ensure the planning and commercial advice is aligned and is in the best interests of Affinity Water.
  • Managing the relationship with Affinity Water’s external solicitors to ensure the provision of robust and timely advice;
  • Advising in relation to the broader commercial aspects of the SROs including: collaboration agreements, bulk supply agreements, procurement and construction contracts.

We have in place external solicitors to advise on the technical legal aspects of the DCO process and commercial agreements, therefore particular expertise in these areas of law is not required. However, the successful candidate will be expected to have experience of these areas in the context of major projects and of providing advice to project teams.

Experience required
  • 5 years PQE,
  • Qualified solicitor or barrister
  • Relevant experience of providing strategic advice in relation to major/large infrastructure projects, either in-house or private practice Excellent legal analytical skills and a close attention to detail

  • Water sector, utilities/infrastructure or construction sector experience
