Job description

To demonstrate skills, to instruct and support learners and staff in practical teaching workshops.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct support to learners and staff engaged in workshop activities.
  • Deliver staff training on specific equipment and software programmes and act as a technical advisor to staff.
  • Prepare classroom/workshop activities, ensuring all materials and equipment are ready for practical IT sessions and manage the retrieval of IT equipment and tools.
  • Provide a store‑keeping service and be responsible for the security of all IT equipment and tools.
  • Maintain and repair specialist equipment to keep it in good working order and safe condition, assist with practical IT classes in demonstrations and support student project work, and contribute to programme team development.
  • Be flexible in supporting the department’s requirements and cross‑college tasks.
  • Be responsible for furniture, equipment and consumable goods used in relation to work.
  • Prepare open evenings setting up promotional stands and exhibition material.
  • Repair and maintain classroom computers used for practical sessions.
  • Perform regular planned maintenance and repairs of all classroom computers.
  • Administer the budget within the computer maintenance and IT shop.
  • Organise and supervise the daily operations in the IT shop and provide direct support to learners and staff engaged in IT shop activities.
  • Support the development and use of 3D printing within the curriculum, including preparing and maintaining 3D printers, advising staff on suitable software and materials, and assisting learners with practical 3D design and printing tasks.
  • Dispose of old and faulty hardware computer components.
  • Clean all equipment.
  • Ensure continuous development and improvement of professional knowledge.
  • Perform any other duties of a similar level of responsibility as may be required.
Essential Qualifications
  • At least Level 3 computer qualifications or related discipline.
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience working within a computer environment / technical support.
  • Ability to assemble and dismantle computers, install and upgrade operating systems/software.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair hardware, software and networking faults.
  • Experience with 3D printing processes, including slicing software, filament management and basic machine maintenance.
  • Ability to support learners with 3D design workflows using software such as Tinkercad, Fusion 360 or similar.
  • Understanding of how 3D printing can enhance curriculum delivery through prototyping, modelling and practical project work.
  • Good knowledge of computer components and hardware troubleshooting.
  • Good knowledge of IT networking and server technologies (including web server).
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft applications, particularly Excel.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Level 4 or above / relevant professional technical qualification.
  • IT/Network support experience.
  • Knowledge of software packages such as ProMonitor, goldmine and student record systems.
