A little more about your role…
  • Undertaking usability evaluations in line with Human Factors standards for equipment/ layout/ HMIs to demonstrate systems support operators to perform tasks in an efficient manner
  • Conducting Project Ergonomics Surveys including observing current railway signalling tasks, level crossing control, measuring operational workload, impact assessments, Training Needs Analysis and analysing and presenting data to be fed into design activities and presented to clients
  • Producing the Concept of Operations to support new/ modified station/ depot design, and conducting Access & Maintenance assessments, room layout & work station design including Control room design.
  • Working with project teams to assess Accessibility and Design for Inclusion.
  • Eliciting Ergonomics requirements and working with project teams to deliver user needs.

Join us as a Human Factors Engineer and you’ll be working with the systems engineering, integration and assurance team. The role of a Human Factors Engineer is to provide Rail Human Factors/ Ergonomics support to the People Centred Design elements of WSP project work.

This includes RAG team‑led work and collaborating with other teams as part of multi‑discipline project work. The focus within the capability is on Specialist Ergonomic Assessments (Task Analysis, Situation Awareness, Workload) Operational Concepts and Plans, Maintenance Concepts and Plans, Customer Experience Strategies, Staff Recruiting and Training Strategies.

The team consists of Human Factors Specialists and Station Operations Specialists working across numerous projects for multiple clients including HS2, Network Rail/ Network Rail Scotland and Crossrail. The role reports to the Technical Lead for People Centred Design. We have recently won projects with two new clients a Control Room redesign for Transport for London – a Human Factors led multi‑disciplinary to redesign an existing Tram Control Room including the construction phasing and temporary control room during construction and two Platform Train Interface projects for the DfT via Connected Places Catapult. The work streams are diverse and we are continuing to build the in‑house capability.

What we are looking for you to demonstrate…
  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline or able to demonstrate an equivalent level of experience
  • Experience of applying ergonomics techniques and processes in the rail industry
  • Knowledge of the railway industry, railway infrastructure and operational roles
  • Previous Human Factors Experience
  • Member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (preferably working towards Chartership)
  • Experience of managing and growing a team
