Job summary

A housing services organization is seeking a Housing Officer to provide frontline housing advice and homelessness prevention support in Devon. Housing Officer - Housing Advice / Homelessness Prevention (Temp)

Location: Devon

Rate: £26.80 LTD

Duration: Temporary - initial assignment with potential for extension

We're recruiting a Housing Officer to provide high-quality frontline housing advice and homelessness prevention support. This is a temporary opportunity for an experienced housing professional who can deliver timely interventions and help clients access housing solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide housing advice and assistance to prevent homelessness, including working with Devon Home Choice and liaising with third parties acting on behalf of clients.
  • Investigate homelessness applications, make decisions in line with council policies, and support clients in finding suitable housing solutions.
  • Liaise with mortgage lenders, private landlords, letting agents, statutory and voluntary agencies, and provide mediation where required.
  • Administer the Council's statutory obligations regarding homelessness, including temporary accommodation placements.
  • Support multi-agency initiatives, projects, and training, and supervise contractors where necessary.
  • Deliver excellent customer service while managing sensitive cases involving vulnerable individuals.
Skills & Experience Required
  • HND or degree in housing (or equivalent experience).
  • Full membership of the Chartered Institute of Housing or other relevant professional body.
  • Proven experience in homelessness prevention and housing advice.
  • Knowledge of housing law, welfare benefits, and relevant legislation, including supporting clients with mental health, domestic abuse, and substance misuse challenges.
  • Strong decision-making, communication, and partnership-working skills.
  • Ability to manage own caseload, work independently, and handle sensitive information responsibly.
