About the Role

Do you have a passion for supporting physiological birth? Do you want to provide unhurried, person‑centred care in the home? Do you have the expertise to provide high quality, safe care? We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic band 6 midwife to support our homebirth service for a 1‑year period. The role will be to become part of a friendly, dedicated homebirth team, providing care in the home through the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period. You will hold a caseload of women for whom you will be the named midwife throughout the antenatal and postnatal period. You need to hold a full driving licence with access to a car and have the flexibility to provide care in the home setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide safe, evidence‑based and personalised care to women and birthing people throughout pregnancy, birth and postnatal journey.
  • Promote and facilitate choice for those wishing to birth at home.
  • Continuously undertake holistic risk assessments to support the delivery of appropriate care.
  • Work in partnership with the wider multidisciplinary team, enabling coordinated care and appropriate referrals.
  • Actively contribute to the reduction in health inequalities by supporting a service that is accessible to all.
  • Effectively manage all aspects of care within the community setting, including intrapartum care at home.
  • Provide safe, research‑based midwifery care to women/birthing people and their babies.
  • Recognise deviations from normality and refer appropriately to medical or other agencies.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of current research and trends in midwifery care, contributing to evidence‑based practices, policies and guidelines for maternity services.
  • Empower women/birthing people to make an informed choice and act as their advocate at all times.
  • Improve experiences of childbirth by offering a choice of place of birth and working in partnership with families when making decisions about care.
  • Work in partnership with medical teams, offering coordinated packages of care and making referrals as appropriate.
  • Promote health and social well‑being, contributing to the reduction in health inequality.
  • Ensure the safety and confidentiality of patients and maintain their records in accordance with Trust Policies.
  • Participate in parenting assessments/education.
  • Maintain effective working relationships across the Trust.
  • Offer models of care personalised to individual needs, acknowledging diversity of client groups and treating everyone with dignity and respect.
  • Support and encourage women/birthing people to achieve good clinical and psychological outcomes for themselves and their babies.
  • Identify families with child in need/child protection issues and effectively communicate to the manager and named midwife for safeguarding.
  • Develop midwifery practice for the future, redefining the role and building on public health skills to maximise the impact on reducing inequalities in health.
  • Work in partnership with children centres and other agencies, offering wider choice and local access to services.
  • Manage effectively all aspects of caseload and administration.
  • Effectively communicate complicated and sensitive information to women, their families and members of a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Ensure changes are implemented based on feedback and learning lessons from feedback from women and incidents.
  • Contribute to the performance management of midwifery services through data collection for audit and research purposes.
Qualifications & Experience

Band 6 midwife with a proven record of delivering high‑quality midwifery care in a community/home‑birth setting. Must have a full driving licence and access to a car. Ability to work day and night shifts to provide 24/7 coverage. Excellent communication skills to enable planning and implementation of individualised, midwifery‑led care in partnership with the wider multidisciplinary team.

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part‑time workers.

  • Disclosure and Barring Service: Your post may be subject to a DBS check which incurs a cost dependent on the level of check required (£49.50 for enhanced and £21.50 for standard). I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if it is required (by deduction from first month's pay). Should I decide to withdraw from my job offer, I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of the DBS check undertaken by cheque or other agreed method.
