Overview

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Healthcare Assistant to join the team at HMP Garth, a high security Category B male prison located in Leyland. HMP Garth has a capacity of around 850 and houses men serving long‑term and indeterminate sentences. This role sits within our Primary Care team, where you will support clinics, work with pharmacy and respond to emergency situations – no two days are ever the same! As our new Healthcare Assistant, your responsibilities will vary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver exceptional care to patients, both in the healthcare department and on the wings
  • Be involved in the implementation of clinical care packages, phlebotomy and assessment, treatment and the evaluation of patient care
  • Support the primary care nursing team with all aspects of care
  • Support clinics, including bloods, ECGs, weight etc.
  • Act as a second checker in pharmacy as required
  • Work primarily within the primary care team, though may be required to carry out duties in the substance misuse or mental health teams

Qualifications
  • Ideally hold an NVQ Level 2 or 3 qualification in Health & Social Care, or Care Certificate
  • Have experience within phlebotomy – this is highly desirable!
  • Have experience in a clinical care setting previously – ideally from a hospital or prison setting
  • Have clinical experience – venepuncture, ECGs etc.
  • Have a non‑judgemental and compassionate approach

Schedule & Compensation

This position is full time, working 37.5 hours per week on a rota basis.

  • Week 1 – Monday, Tuesday, Saturday, Sunday
  • Week 2 – Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
  • Shifts – 07:30 – 19:45 (Week days)
  • Night shifts – 19:45 – 07:30 (2 of the 8‑week rota)
  • Salary – £25,557 – £29,723 per annum, depending on experience
