NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK, employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

Shift pattern for the post are full time posts, working a mixture of long days/night shifts.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, Band 3, Health Care Support Worker to join the nursing team within the Surgical Receiving Unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

It is a busy receiving unit which requires an individual who thrives in a fast paced environment.

We have Surgical five wards, two 30‑bed wards for receiving (ward 63 and 64) and a 12‑bed Surgical Assessment Unit as well as Ward 65, 66/49 and ERAS wards.

You will play an important part in the patients’ journey, working within the unit assisting registered nurses and the clinical team in the care of emergency receiving patients undergoing surgical assessment, investigation and management.

You must have a commitment to the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate patient‑centred care. You must also demonstrate excellent communication skills.

You should be able to work autonomously as well as within a team and be committed to continuous professional development.

To meet the challenges of this post you must hold SVQ level 2 or be willing to complete it within the first year of employment and have relevant experience in a caring environment.

We can offer a wide range of training opportunities to advance and develop your skills. Within the ward setting you are supported through your development by experienced team members.

You will be required to achieve the mandatory induction standards for Health Care Support Workers in Scotland and to comply with the Code of Conduct throughout your employment.

Information for candidates

As from 1st April 2026, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will be reducing from 37 to 36 hours per week. Part‑time hours will be reduced pro‑rata. However, there will be a corresponding increase in the hourly rate so that pay will not be affected.
