Job description

As an apprentice at Survey Solutions, you have the exciting opportunity to progress your career within the geomatics sector. You will work on land and measured building surveying, utilities, CCTV, drainage, topographical and other surveying projects, learning to conduct surveys on site using innovative technology and how to process data in the office. The ideal candidate will have an interest in outdoor activities and a passion for a career as a surveyor.

Responsibilities
  • Work on site with experienced surveyors, conducting land and measured building/utility surveys using innovative technology and processing data in the office.
  • Undertake on‑job training and earn while you learn.
  • Set up surveying instruments, record data and provide logistical support to surveyors.
  • Assist with office tasks such as processing surveying data, instrument checks, organising and loading equipment, and data input.
  • Maintain survey instruments to a high working standard and ensure they are fit for purpose.
  • Attend and contribute effectively to training and development days to assist your progression through the programme.
  • Follow Survey Solutions health and safety policies and procedures, promote a high standard of health, safety and welfare in the workplace and to members of the public while on site.
  • Plan and prepare Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS) and report any additional controls required.
  • Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Carry out adjustment checks on survey equipment.
  • Interpret information from client drawings and specifications and gather information from a range of sources.
  • Communicate with others verbally (colleagues and stakeholders) and in writing (internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers).
  • Plan surveys, selecting survey equipment for a project according to the client’s specification; plan routes to existing and new sites.
  • Establish a survey control on site using total station, GNSS or levels; use setting‑out engineering equipment such as measuring tapes, string, distances and bearings, and total station coordinates to peg out grids and offsets.
  • Use survey equipment (total stations, levels, laser scanners, GNSS) and processing software to produce 2D or 3D drawings, models or reports.
  • Apply quality assurance procedures to site work, drawings, models or reports.
  • Manage time and tasks to meet project deadlines.
  • Comply with relevant industry legislation, regulations and environmental, social, human and economic sustainability requirements.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in Geospatial Surveying (Level 3) or equivalent.
  • English and maths (if required) Level 2, GCSE in:
  • – English (grade 4/C) or equivalent.
  • – Maths (grade 4/C) or equivalent.
  • Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Salary, Hours & Working Conditions

£15,704 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age. National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices applies.

Training course: Geospatial Survey Technician (Level 3).

Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 5:30 pm. Times will vary due to site work and regular travel to client sites. Overtime and weekends may be required occasionally.

Start date: Monday 26 January 2026. Duration: 2 years. 40 hours a week. A full driving licence, access to a vehicle and the ability to reliably commute to the office each day is required. The role involves travelling to different client sites, with early start times and occasional overnight stays. Flexibility and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions are essential. Candidates must be over 18.
