The Ormesby Humanities Department is a welcoming department of 4 staff (2 historians and 2 geographers) who are passionate about their subject specialisms. Our department is well respected within the Academy and is located centrally, with all classrooms close together. Geography classrooms are resourced with interactive whiteboards, visualisers and ample storage to enable diverse teaching methods. We have a shared workroom with computers, fridge, kettle and snacks. We also have a range of teaching and learning books, subscriptions to professional organisations such as Hodder - Wide World magazine, and resources to support professional development.
Wellbeing and workload management are a priority. We work collaboratively, share resources and planning, and support each other with planning, marking and sometimes teaching. We believe we can achieve the best for our students by sharing expertise and best practices.
We are proud of our geography curriculum. KS3 follows a 3-year program to develop critical thinking, global understanding and employability skills, with a genuine love of Geography. KS3 geographers have 2 hours per week in year 7, 1 hour in year 8, and 2 hours in year 9. The program goes beyond the National Curriculum with local studies and challenging enquiries. At GCSE we follow AQA; units covered include Paper 1: Natural Hazards, Living World, Coasts and Rivers; Paper 2: Urban, Economic Change; Resource Management and Water; Paper 3: Pre-Release and Fieldwork.
The leadership of the department is overseen by a Head of Department based at a school within our community; it may be required that part of your week is based in another academy.
