First Contact Physiotherapy Practitioner

The Partnership is looking to recruit an extended Scope, First Contact Physiotherapist Practitioner. Reporting to our Lead Physiotherapist Practitioner, the role will involve working autonomously, across the 5 Partnership sites, providing highly specialised assessment and treatment of patients within your area of clinical specialty. As such you will advise, influence, promote and create models of practice, which offer a continuum of care and equality of access.

This role is suitable for a Physiotherapist with enhanced skills so that they can be the first point of contact for patients with MSK symptoms. Applicants must have current UK professional registration. Experience in a similar role within Primary Care is desirable. The ability to carry out joint injections or willing to train is essential.

This post is a stand-alone role but you will report to the Lead Physiotherapist Practitioner who will be able to offer support and guidance to deliver care within the partnership setting.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide specialist clinical care to patients; working to service standards, protocols and standards from Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and other national, regional and local guidelines (e.g. NICE etc).
  • To work as part of the clinical team to provide expert, evidence based care to patients.
  • To be responsible for the management of complex patients providing a high level of clinical expertise and exemplifying good practice in the assessment, treatment and management of patients including onward referral.
  • To work with other members of the site teams to innovate, develop and implement new ways of working to improve the care pathway for patients.
  • To competently triage patients as to their suitability for intervention within their area of specialty including assigning to relevant assessment routes, groups or one to one interventions.
  • To demonstrate extended knowledge, for example, in the fields of radiography and other investigations.
  • To be, or be prepared to undertake training to become an injection therapist is essential.
  • To work as a lone practitioner to deliver care within the Partnership setting. To be responsible for own practices and be accountable for all aspects of Physiotherapy treatment and care delivered to the patient.
  • To interpret and analyse relevant clinical and non-clinical facts which may be conflicting to formulate accurate diagnoses and to implement comprehensive management strategies.
  • To ensure, where possible, that all intervention is evidence based.
  • To work to professional and service standards and participate in the auditing of these standards when appropriate and take part in clinical supervision.
  • To communicate highly complex and sensitive information to patients and carers in an understandable way, this may include the use of interpreters. Communication skills of persuasion, motivation, explanation and gaining informed consent with all patients including those with a condition inhibiting effective communication will be required in order to disseminate difficult to accept information i.e. expectation of treatment.
  • To communicate all information effectively to members of the team and across other health and social care sectors to ensure collaborative working.
  • To participate in meetings, clinical audit and professional development activities.
  • To take legal responsibility for own clinical actions.
  • To promote best practice and facilitate the integration of research into practice through clinical reasoning and decision making.
  • To develop and maintain links with appropriate hospital staff in order to improve continuity of care.
  • To act as a specialist resource for Physiotherapy treatment and advice.
  • To produce timely referrals and reports.
  • To understand a sound understanding of Clinical Governance and risk management and apply to the work situation.
  • To triage referrals into the MSK pathway using clinical reasoning or directly to secondary care where appropriate.
  • To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up to date documentation in accordance with legal and departmental requirements and procedures.
  • To be responsible when requesting/reporting absences in line with Partnership policies; following local guidelines to ensure clinical continuity is maintained.
  • To propose and implement changes to policy and procedures which have a direct impact on the patient to optimise patient care.
  • To participate in the management of all available resources to ensure an efficient and effective service which is consistent, accessible and relevant to patients needs.
  • To participate in new service developments as required.
