Role and Responsibilities

Subject to the policies and practices of the School and the Council, the duties of principal teachers (in addition to duties of a teacher) include:

  • Lead, manage and support the work of colleagues, providing strategic direction and guidance as necessary.
  • Lead curriculum development and quality assurance.
  • Contribute to the development of school policy in relation to the behaviour management of pupils.
  • Review and support professional needs and performance of colleagues through career-long professional learning.
  • Lead, implement and manage whole school policies including guidance, pastoral care and behaviour support where required.

Principal Teachers must be given a reduction in weekly class contact to enable these duties, which are in addition to classroom teaching. The extent varies with duties and must be achievable within the 35-hour week, including any classroom duties, as agreed at establishment level.

Qualifications and Requirements

GTC Registration is required. It is a legal requirement for any teacher teaching in a Scottish state school to be registered with GTC Scotland.

Preferably, candidates are identified after the selection process; however, preferred candidates may be required to assist recruitment checks to ensure timely completion. If recruitment checks are not completed within a reasonable timeframe you may be withdrawn from the process.

Canvassing of elected Members or employees of South Lanarkshire Council shall disqualify the applicant.

Salary and Benefits

Salary: Principal Teacher 6, £66,606 per year. Salary in line with the Teachers' Conditions of Service; may be recalculated to reflect pay accruals for the current school year. Further information on the SNCT Handbook is available as indicated by the council.
