Job description
Senior Ecologist – Pick Everard

We are passionate about creating a prosperous and sustainable future, taking a fresh perspective on the built environment. Our core values of professionalism, compassion, drive and positivity are at the heart of everything we do.

About the Role

A typical day at work would include assisting with fee proposals, completing ecological desk studies, designing and leading on field work to include preliminary ecological assessments, baseline habitat mapping, species surveys (or coordinating specialist sub‑consultants), completion of statutory biodiversity metric baseline calculations, collaborating with design teams to integrate ecological constraints and opportunities, design of biodiversity net gain (or regional equivalent) and completion of technical reports. The role can be adapted to suit an applicant’s career interests and aspirations; however, a crucial element of the role is the willingness to complete field work and the ability to confidently and independently design and complete baseline ecological assessments as a minimum.

Responsibilities
  • Organise and lead field surveys and monitor survey progress.
  • Undertake analysis and review ecological data for accuracy and quality.
  • Produce ecological reports, including specific assessments and management plans.
  • Organise and support in Ecological Clerk of Works roles.
  • Identify and support the development of strategies on ecological constraints and opportunities on potential projects.
  • Prepare work and fee proposals and contribute to project bidding.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors and stakeholders on technical strategy and advice.
  • Understand health and safety issues relevant to surveying, report any hazards on site and assist in preparing risk‑avoiding measures.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree in ecology, biology, environmental or related science.
  • Experience of appraising projects for potential ecological constraints and opportunities.
  • Experience surveying UK habitats – ideally FISC 4 botanical skills, or the ability to achieve this within 12 months with Pick Everard support.
  • Experience in survey design and mitigation for protected species and coordination of sub‑consultants.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management at an appropriate level, or equivalent.
  • Experience of using the statutory biodiversity metric to evidence biodiversity net gain.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation, case law and planning policy relevant to ecology.
  • Knowledge of relevant guidance and standards for a range of species.
  • Experience of mitigation licence processes relevant to protected species.
  • Organisational and communication skills applied to clients and project teams.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Experience of working with GIS software.
  • Enjoys working outdoors and willingness to complete field surveys, including occasional antisocial hours.
  • Valid driving license required.
Benefits
  • Competitive salary.
  • 26 days’ annual leave + bank holidays.
  • Option to buy up to 5 days of additional leave.
  • Private healthcare and life assurance.
  • Healthcare cash plan.
  • Stakeholder pension.
  • Professional subscriptions.
  • Employee discount scheme.
  • Eyecare scheme.
  • Wellbeing support and employee assistance programme.
