Job description

The Diabetes Specialist Midwife plays a vital role in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to women and birthing people with diabetes during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Working within Croydon Health Services' maternity department, the post holder will provide specialist support in both midwife-led and consultant-led clinics, as well as inpatient settings. This role involves offering clinical advice, coordinating care within a multidisciplinary team, and contributing to service development through audits, education, and guideline implementation. The position requires a proactive, compassionate professional committed to improving outcomes for mothers and babies while upholding the Trust's values of compassion, professionalism, respect, and safety.

Main duties of the job
  • Deliver specialist midwifery care and diabetes support across antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal pathways.
  • Provide education and guidance to women and birthing people newly diagnosed with gestational diabetes, including safe insulin administration.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Diabetes Specialist Midwife to review diabetes control, arrange follow-up care, and support service management in their absence.
  • Participate in teaching and mentorship for midwives, students, and support staff, ensuring a positive learning environment.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical practice through evidence-based care, audit participation, and adherence to Trust policies.
  • Contribute to parent education sessions and promote breastfeeding from the antenatal period.
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping and compliance with clinical governance, safeguarding, infection control, and health and safety protocols.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will act as an autonomous practitioner within the maternity team, providing continuity of care where possible and supporting the development of diabetes pathways. Responsibilities include:

  • clinical governance activities such as implementing research-based protocols, monitoring quality standards, and participating in local and national audits.
  • managerial duties, including supervising maternity support workers, assisting with staff appraisals, and maintaining diabetes-related equipment and supplies.
  • Leadership is integral to this position, requiring the ability to motivate staff, act as a role model, and contribute to service evaluation and improvement.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
  • NMC Registered Midwife.
  • Educated to degree level
  • Documented evidence of further studies
  • Assessor/mentorship course or equivalent
Knowledge and experience
  • Band 6 practicing midwife
  • Awareness and understanding of all clinical areas within maternity (community and inpatient).
  • Able to provide all aspects of routine midwifery care.
  • Understanding child protection and safeguarding responsibilities.
  • Awareness of risk management and reporting.
  • Ability to make appropriate clinical decisions in the light of research evidence, facilitate informed choice and consideration given to individual circumstance
  • Ability to problem solve logically as they arise.
  • Able to teach home blood glucose monitoring and use equipment
  • More than 12 months post registration experience
  • Advanced understanding of Diabetes in pregnancy.
  • Appreciation of counselling skills.
  • Experience of health education to both patients and staff.
  • Understand systems of team approach in midwifery.
  • Understanding of quality improvement and the process of change.
Skills and abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with service users, colleagues, senior staff and other professionals in primary/acute care and agencies.
  • Practice as an autonomous midwife in the acute and primary care setting.
  • Demonstrate good organisation skills.
  • Ability to think logically, prioritise and use initiative
  • The ability to: Administer intravenous medicines, cannulation, and perform perineal suturing.
  • Can deal with staff/patients in a sensitive manner.
  • Motivated to develop personally, professionally and development of the service.
