Overview
E17 is a 10-bedded ward specialising in Paediatric Renal and Urology. We are part of the Nottingham Children's Hospital, the first Children's Hospital in Europe to be accredited the Pathway to Excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Centre.
You must be an RSCN or RN Child qualified nurse with substantial experience of working in a Children's Hospital setting as a Band 5 or Band 6 nurse. You must be able to lead a team, demonstrating excellent organizational and clinical skills. You will be expected to co-ordinate care on the ward and deputise and support the Ward Manager. Responsibilities
- Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to patients and, in collaboration with the Ward Manager, identify the common issues which affect the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings.
- In collaboration with the Ward Manager, ensure that the patient has a satisfactory experience by evaluating patient process and the pathway of care.
- Support the Ward Manager in ensuring clinical audit takes place in line with the Trust’s requirements to improve practice.
- Be a point of contact for patients, visitors, relatives and staff acting as a resource for problems, needs and able to clearly present the patient’s view to others.
- Support the Ward Manager in ensuring the development and on-going management of work rosters that provide appropriate safe staff cover.
- Deliver direct patient care and provide leadership and management support to the Ward Sister and team to ensure safe, effective running of the ward on a daily basis.
- Manage daily ward operations, including shifts, and ensure safe and effective care for patients and their families.
- Be a major instrument of change within the clinical area in response to clinical incidents and/or demands.
- Identify hazards, undertake risk assessments, and promote a culture of governance within the ward or department.
- Encourage involvement of ward/department staff in resource management and understand financial issues.
- Contribute to the work of time-limited committees and project groups.
- Maintain accurate records in accordance with Trust and national policy, and ensure nursing documentation is regularly reviewed and updated.
- Continuing professional development appropriate to the field of practice and develop leadership skills, enabling empowerment of ward teams.
- Support the development of students through quality clinical placements, mentorship, and teaching with registered nurses.
- Share best practice with colleagues in the directorate, division and Trust, and support service changes and developments.
- Demonstrate clear lines of communication within the clinical area and ensure appropriate authority over issues within the multi-professional team.
- Assist in establishing, motivating and developing the clinical team with a clear focus and direction, keeping the team informed of policies and strategy, and pursuing personal development.
Conditions
This post is essential to the safe and effective running of the ward, including delivery of direct patient care and emotional support. It provides leadership and management support to the Ward Sister and team to ensure safe, effective daily operation.
Requirements
- Experience of managing the ward on a daily basis (in charge of shifts regularly).

- Ability to work with Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in ensuring development and ongoing management of rosters for safe staff cover.
- Experience with clinical auditing and infection control is implied through responsibilities.
