Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a dynamic, motivated team of renal nurses who deliver a high standard of specialist care at the renal dialysis clinic situated in the grounds of Halton Hospital. You will be working in a friendly and supportive environment providing comprehensive care and support to patients and relatives. The successful candidate will support the Manager to maintain standards, assist with staff management and the provision of excellent patient care and outcomes. The unit currently has 12 stations running from 07:00 - 19:00, Monday - Saturday. The clinic is closed on Sundays. There are also haemodialysis units at Lower ground floor New Royal Liverpool hospital, Warrington, St Helens and Broadgreen hospitals and there may be occasions when you will be asked to support at one of these clinics. Responsibilities
  • Deputises in the absence of the Ward Manager
  • Works in partnership with the Ward Manager to deliver unit objectives, and assesses, plans, implements and evaluates programmes of evidence‑based nursing care
  • Provides management and organization of the clinical area, and participates in the education, development and line management of other staff members
  • Works collaboratively and co‑operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families
  • Participates in improvement of services and the quality‑of‑care provision
  • Works with the Ward Manager to achieve LQA and CQC essential standards; collaborates with the Unit Manager for planning and implementing developments relating to nursing
  • Collaborates with the Infection Prevention Control team to ensure coordination and implementation of all IPC policies
  • Supports the Unit Manager in implementing the Patient Experience and Engagement Strategy and reports nursing issues and concerns promptly to the Unit Manager
  • Supports the Unit Manager in developing a Patient Safety Culture and in building systems and processes to achieve key clinical quality indicators at unit level, and safeguards all vulnerable adults within the ward area
  • Acts as a role model and expert nurse, providing in‑depth specialist clinical knowledge to colleagues through MDT meetings, and to patients and carers/relatives
  • Undertakes clinical supervision of nursing colleagues individually or in groups
  • Acts as a resource for health‑care professionals, being visible, available and accessible for support and advice in relation to patient management
  • Ensures effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources
  • Leads consultations and contributes to the development of strategies for delivering effective care within a changing environment that improves quality of care and health outcomes in the specialist area
  • Conducts assessment of the patient pre‑ and post‑dialysis
  • Understands dialysis prescription, blood pressure and weight management, access care (arteriovenous fistula, graft, hero graft, femoral line, central venous line), and administration of intravenous medication during dialysis treatment
  • Performs monthly blood monitoring in line with Renal Association Guidelines, and safe blood sampling, labelling, storage and transportation
  • Is fully competent in preparing the dialysis machine and consumables for different modalities
  • Understands how the dialysis treatment works and how to troubleshoot medically and technically
  • Monitors the patient throughout treatment, recording and reporting any incidents, accidents, concerns or changes
  • Is competent to administer anticoagulants during dialysis with awareness of drug prescribed, contraindications, adverse effects and side effects
  • Is competent to administer local anaesthesia as required
  • Safely discontinues dialysis and removes fistula needles
  • Practises ANTT to competency and follows infection control, PPE and blood‑borne virus awareness with strict adherence to policy and procedure
  • Performs diabetes awareness, foot checks and referrals to relevant departments
  • Liaises with the Nephrology Team, Renal Dietitians, Psychology, Cardiology, Transplant and other related areas
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • Registered Nurse or Midwife
  • Post‑basic specialist qualification relevant to the specialty
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • UK professional registration
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Recordable specialist qualification
  • Independent prescribing experience (e.g., PRN.P1.0)
  • ECDL and post‑registration experience
  • Extensive clinical experience
  • Involvement in audit
  • Participation in research
