Credit Controller / Accounts Assistant

Based: Hemel Hempstead, with hybrid working

Type: Full-time, 12-month contract

Academia is seeking a Credit Controller / Accounts Assistant to join our dedicated and passionate Finance team. This is a full-time position providing maternity cover for twelve months, with the potential to become a permanent role at the end of the contract.

The role will be based at our headquarters in Hemel Hempstead. It involves working primarily in a Credit Control team of 3, with support to a wider Finance team of 11 as needed. The finance team is mainly UK-based.

This role offers hybrid working, with up to 2 days a week from home (subject to management discretion).

The ideal candidate will have experience as a credit controller in a B2B environment. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a dynamic, analytical environment and resolving problems. The role involves liaising with internal teams and external customers to ensure timely payments and efficient finance operations.

This environment is high-volume and fast-paced, requiring the successful candidate to start effectively from day one.

You will be responsible for:
Credit Controller

The successful candidate will manage customer accounts and perform administrative duties within the credit control team. Responsibilities include ensuring customers have appropriate credit limits and that accounts are settled promptly. Strong communication skills, diplomacy, and the ability to handle difficult situations are essential.

  • Monitoring debtor account balances and maintaining acceptable Debtor Sales Outstanding (DSO) levels
  • Processing new account applications, conducting credit checks, and setting credit limits
  • Reconciling accounts
  • Posting daily cash receipts
  • Sending weekly reminders and statements
  • Handling queries and resolving issues promptly
  • Managing finance tickets, customer calls, payments, and other administrative tasks
Accounts Assistant

As part of the wider finance team, you may assist in other areas such as Accounts Payable, supporting senior managers, or ad-hoc tasks.
