Job description
Job summary

We are recruiting one replacement substantive Consultant Neurology post, ideally suited for a general neurologist. A special interest in a subspecialty, including Epilepsy or Headache, would be desirable. The post will supplement existing Neurological services in Hull and NLAG hospitals.

Main duties

A standard full time Job Plan will contain 10 programmed activities (PAs). 7.5 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) and 2.5 for supporting activities (SPAs). 1.5 SPAs are classed as core covering training, teaching, CPD, audit, appraisal, clinical governance and attendance at service meetings. There are opportunities to participate in undergraduate teaching within the HYMS medical school curriculum. Additional SPA time can be allocated for research, clinical management and educational supervisor (ES) activity. The post would include educational supervision of at least one trainee per year, from any level of training. The appointee should have completed ES training or complete this within a short time. New appointees will be encouraged to develop management skills by taking on a management role. Additional PA time is negotiable for more senior management, research or educational roles. The weekly Job Plan includes one PA for on‑call work.

Job responsibilities
  • Lead and deliver acute neurological care across district general hospitals and neuroscience centres.
  • Provide sound clinical opinion on a range of acute neurological conditions.
  • Take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Supervise junior medical staff and contribute to teaching.
  • Participate in audit, research and quality improvement projects.
  • Develop and operationalise coherent ideas for service development and delivery.
  • Manage and lead medical teams, ensuring smooth and efficient running of the unit.
Person specification
Qualifications and Training
  • Essential: MRCP(UK) or equivalent higher medical qualification.
  • Desirable: Postgraduate degree (MD, PhD) or significant experience in postgraduate training.
Professional Registration
  • Essential: Full Registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Desirable: GMC Specialist Registration (or expected inclusion within 6 months).
Clinical Experience
  • Essential: Demonstrable commitment to Neurology, ability to offer sound clinical opinion on a range of acute Neurological conditions, independent responsibility for clinical care.
  • Desirable: Experience delivering acute Neurological care in Neuroscience Centre and District General Hospitals.
Management and Administration Experience
  • Essential: Ability to manage and lead medical teams, lead efficient unit running, organise priority and manage high‑intensity workload.
  • Desirable: Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service delivery.
Teaching, Audit and Research
  • Essential: Supervising junior medical staff, formal and informal teaching, participation in audit, extrapolate clinical research evidence for individual patients.
  • Desirable: Conducted practice‑changing audit, original peer‑reviewed research publications.
Personal Attributes
  • Essential: Flexible work style, develop new model of Neurological care, excellent manner with patients, effective communication with other hospital departments, willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities.
  • Desirable: Effective communication with teams and external agencies, familiarity with service organisation and development issues.
