Consultant in Rheumatology

Overview

An opportunity has arisen for full-time Consultant in Rheumatology within a growing, dynamic and forward thinking Rheumatology service at Chelsea & Westminster Foundation Trust. The post will also be joint with London North West University Healthcare Trust (LNWUH) and have dedicated Research sessions with LNWUH in the first 2 years.

The candidate will join a faculty at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital which currently consists of 4 Consultants, a Specialty Doctor and a Specialist Registrar, working with a multidisciplinary team. In recent years the service has developed with additional Rheumatology Consultant time, additional Rheumatology Nurse Specialists and an increase in Specialist Rheumatology Pharmacist and Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner support. The appointed individual is expected to uphold the Trust values to ensure the delivery of the highest quality care to patients.

The post holder should have a wide experience of Rheumatology, including management of patients with auto-immune connective tissue disease / vasculitis and osteoporosis as well as inflammatory arthritis and general rheumatology. It is desirable for them to have a Masters or other further degree in a Rheumatology-related subject. They should show keen interest and experience in clinical research and commitment to audit and service improvement.

Job responsibilities
  • Participate in, and provide committed Rheumatology outpatient care, and inpatient support.
  • Participate in the GIM (General Medical) rota for the hospital.
  • Facilitate access to a full range of inpatient and outpatient Rheumatology services.
  • Be expected to cover for absent Consultant colleagues to allow for annual and study leave.
  • Make collaboration between hospital and community services as efficient as possible, supporting discharge from hospital where appropriate and ensuring appropriate follow up arrangements.
  • Provide peer group support, supervision, further education and professional development essential to the welfare and effectiveness of trainees in Rheumatology, General Internal Medicine and the allied professions.
  • Be educationally responsible for supporting training and appraisal of junior staff
  • Demonstrate a continuing commitment to medical audit and service development in Rheumatology.
  • Demonstrate commitment to engagement in clinical trials in Rheumatology as opportunities arise.
  • Develop communication and other non-clinical aspects of Rheumatology services.
  • Actively participate in undergraduate teaching of clinical medical students attached to the department

Education and Qualifications
  • CCT (or within 6 months of CCT) or on the Specialist Register. The candidate should be accredited in both General Medicine and Rheumatology
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Higher degree e.g. PhD or MD
Experience
  • Evidence of broad based training experience in Rheumatology equivalent to that required for a UK CCST
  • Teaching experience / willingness to teach medical, nursing & other staff
  • Experience of audit / clinical research
  • Understanding of the NHS and its organisation
  • Completed publications in appropriate journal(s)
Skills and Knowledge

  • Willingness and ability to participate in the on-call rota
