Job description
Overview

There is one substantive consultant post available to join the existing team of fourteen NHS consultants, one Clinical Professor and two nurse consultants. This dynamic academic respiratory unit provides opportunities for sub-specialty development, respiratory-related research, and medical education, with close links to the Norwich Medical School. The department is integrated with the department of thoracic surgery and has state of the art facilities for radiology, lung function and bronchoscopy.

We are looking to expand the number of respiratory consultants at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. We would consider applications in any sub-specialty, but would particularly welcome expertise in sleep and ventilation, cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis, or asthma.

A candidate who is unable for personal reasons to undertake the duties of a whole-time post will receive equal consideration. We are specifically looking for a consultant with experience in sleep medicine and non-invasive ventilation to join our existing team; the role also includes duties in general respiratory medicine.

Responsibilities and duties
  • All consultants, including the new appointees, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust’s Clinical Governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management. This will be included in the candidate’s job plan.
  • The appointee will be a member of the Consultant Staff Committee and be expected to serve on this committee.
  • The appointees will share office space, band 3 and band 4 admin staff with other consultant colleagues in the Department of Respiratory Medicine and will be mentored by one of the existing Respiratory consultants.
  • The appointees will share with the other respiratory consultants: on call duties; in-patient duties; attendance at appropriate MDT meetings; undergraduate and post-graduate medical teaching; clinical and educational supervision of junior doctors; departmental management duties; support of clinical research.
  • All consultants, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust’s Clinical Governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.
Context and opportunities

We treat more than one million patients; people from Norfolk, neighbouring counties and further afield. Our patients are referred to us by around 100 local GP practices but we are also a tertiary referral centre from other acute hospitals and primary care trusts around the country. Norwich is a beautiful and historic city set within the picturesque Norfolk countryside. It has good links to London and is located close to the stunning North Norfolk coast. Norwich also hosts a year-round calendar of events and festivals.

As a University teaching hospital we have established our research and development strategy in partnership with the University of East Anglia. Currently we are conducting three multi-centred NIHR funded studies, in Interstitial Lung Disease, asthma and bronchiectasis. We also work closely with our partners in the Norwich Research Park and Norwich Radiology Academy to take forward our ambitious targets for research and development. The UEA School of Medicine was founded in 2002 and is now consistently ranked in the top 20 medical schools in the UK. Applicants would have the opportunity to contribute to medical student teaching.
