Job description

This is a full-time substantive post (less than full-time would be considered for the right candidate) for a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine. The intention is that the postholder will be instrumental in delivering a high-quality clinical service in collaboration with regional Integrated Care Board members. This role will actively take part in the future, expanding development of the Respiratory service at Walsall NHS Trust. The successful applicant will also contribute, with other consultant respiratory colleagues, to the care of respiratory and GIM (GIM is optional) on-call rota. The postholder will have a track record of excellent clinical service delivery, service improvement, teaching, training, and other qualities as identified in the person specification. It is a requirement of the post that every doctor takes part in annual job planning and annual appraisal as part of the re-validation cycle.

Main duties of the job

Duties of the post will include bronchoscopy sessions, general respiratory ward rounds and teaching and supervision of junior medical staff. The ideal candidate for this post should be skilled in Endoscopic Bronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) or willing to undertake training in this procedure. The post is for 10 Programmed Activities per week with an additional PA available subject to negotiation to cover a Saturday morning ward on a 1:8 rota. Participation in the General medical on call rota the current rota frequency being 1:18, which will incur an additional PA. Total PAs for this role is 11.5.

Part-time candidates will be welcomed to apply in addition to a flexible job plan. The Trust and the Respiratory Medicine department have a robust programme for mentoring the new Consultant appointment.

Job responsibilities

  1. To assist the current team and have responsibility for ensuring a commitment to provide a high quality of Respiratory and General Internal Medicine Services to patients by continual development of practice in the light of evidence-base, and clinical standards.
  2. To provide advice to colleagues in other specialities on Respiratory care.
  3. To provide a comprehensive Outpatient service and good interventional skills for the delivery of all Bronchoscopy/EBUS procedural sessions. Training and accreditation for EBUS will be provided by the department if required.
  4. To provide clinical support and teaching to Junior Medical Staff, Medical Students and Postgraduate Medical Education. Presently the Respiratory department has an input of 3rd, 4th, and 5th year medical students. The post holder will be expected to achieve educational and supervision accreditation within the first year of joining the Respiratory team. They will also be expected to participate in junior medical doctor supervision.
  5. To participate as part of personal CPD development the involvement in local and national quality improvement projects. The department will provide training support if required.
  6. Research opportunities are available in conjunction with the research team.
  7. To have responsibility for ensuring a commitment to maintaining a high quality of service to patients.
  8. To actively participate in CPD and personal development plans.
  9. To undertake Saturday respiratory ward round on a rotational basis with other Respiratory consultants and the Acute Respiratory Infection virtual ward.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Basic Medical Degree Full MRCP (or equivalent) Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via. 1.CCT in Respiratory and GIM (Proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) 2.Or CCT in GIM and minimum 5 years training in Respiratory Medicine

Professional Registration

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practice

Training and Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Respiratory (or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview)
  • A wide experience in Respiratory Medicine
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.
  • Fully registered with the GMC with licence to practice Ability to offer expert clinical advice on range of problems.

Desirable

  • Experience in Endobronchial Ultrasound
  • Experience in Cancer
