Job description
Overview

The post will form part of the Clinical Directorate of Emergency Medicine. The post holder will be expected to support the Clinical Director across the whole range of their managerial and administrative functions. All consultants are eligible for consideration of appointment by the Chief Executive to the office of Clinical Director. The current Clinical Director of the Emergency Department in Preston and Chorley is Dr Nicola Fallon. Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the Emergency Service for the Directorate.

Clinical duties will include all those duties normally expected of a Consultant in a similar sized Emergency Department in the United Kingdom. The two Emergency Departments act as a single Emergency Service based on the two sites. The Royal Preston site is designated as the Major Trauma Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria with ED leading the multi-disciplinary trauma team. Successful applicants will join an extensive team of 28 Middle Grade doctors (including ST3-6 trainees), 36 Junior Doctors (F2-ST2 and SCF) and 3 FY1 doctors providing clinical support. There is a dedicated, highly skilled nursing workforce including Nurse Clinicians, Emergency Nurse Practitioners and Physiotherapists providing extensive cover. The ED rota is annualised to support home-life balance. SPA activity will be written in the contract for simulation training as well as that required for revalidation; any further SPA would be negotiable to enhance the candidate’s expertise and interests. There are opportunities to be involved with education at undergraduate and multi-disciplinary postgraduate levels, as well as research and audit. The consultant body is encouraged to lead at Directorate level and governance procedures are well regarded. For those with children, both hospital sites have a nursery.

Responsibilities
  • Support the Clinical Director across the full range of managerial and administrative functions.
  • Adopt, with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the Emergency Service for the Directorate.
  • Provide director input to patients; contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and lead the coordination of care for patients within Preston and Chorley Hospitals.
  • Participate in the Consultant on-call rota at the Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley and South Ribble Hospitals with additional cover during colleagues’ absence.
  • Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off-duty periods.
  • Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, through direct care and continuing professional development.
  • Develop close links with General Practitioners operating in the area.
  • Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect priorities within available resources.
  • Engage in clinical duties expected of a Consultant in a similarly sized Emergency Department.
