Job description

The Urgent and Emergency Care team, DMH comprises of ED, SDEC and AMU. There have been significant changes to the Front of House with the addition of Same Day Emergency Care and the agreed expansion of the medical workforce which makes us an attractive place to work for anyone who wishes to experience true team work between clinicians, managers and patients.

We believe this is an opportunity to join a dynamic & established consultant team who lead from the frontline, supported by an experienced middle grade tier and skilled nursing team, providing outstanding 24 hour care.

We are now seeking applications from Consultants in Emergency Medicine to be based at DMH. This is a fantastic opportunity for applicants who can demonstrate a track record of commitment to education.

There will also be consideration for Temporary Additional PAs (TAPAs), The main duties of the advertised post will be as follows:

Responsibilities
  • To provide Emergency Medicine services in Darlington Memorial Hospital. The post holder will be expected to provide a comprehensive clinical service together with consultant colleagues. The Consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge. The Consultant will be responsible in conjunction with colleagues for planning future developments of these services.
  • Supervision of and assistance to junior and middle grade medical staff and Emergency Nurse Practitioners.
  • To act as Team Leader in the resuscitation of seriously traumatised patients and those with critical illness.
  • To conduct review clinics.
  • To provide a Consultant presence daily (job plans currently under review).
  • Give advice over the telephone or attend the department as required, when on call on a 1 in 8 basis.
  • Participate in the senior doctor rota performing clinical duties and acting as medical co-ordinator.
  • Assist in the smooth integration of the Emergency Department and acute services.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.
