You will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with acute medical conditions, ensuring that they receive a 'second-to-none' standard of care from admission to discharge. You will work closely with other consultants, resident doctors, and multi‑disciplinary teams to ensure patient pathways operate unhindered.
The Acute Medicine department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is a dynamic department known for taking a hands‑on role in service development, quality improvement, education and training.
In December 2022, we opened the doors to our brand new Acute Medical Unit (AMU) that boasts 36 assessment spaces, split across level 2 and level 3, and that houses our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facility. We also take responsibility for additional Acute Medicine capacity on our 24 bed EAU4 (Emergency Assessment Unit).
The team is responsible for the care of patients across these areas alongside providing an Acute Medicine in‑reach service in the Emergency Department during daytime hours.

Acute Medicine benefits from an experienced and knowledgeable leadership team that has a strong working relationship with the Trust senior leadership and executive team through its work in development of our acute services.
Acute Medicine is well known as a nurturing and supportive department both for senior medical staff and for doctors in training. We work collaboratively with the well‑established multidisciplinary teams of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and discharge co‑ordinators on our Emergency Assessment Unit and Acute Medical Unit, all of which maintain a strong culture of safety and professionalism.
