Job Summary

Consultant in Acute Medicine: Up to 10 PA's

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with acute medical conditions, ensuring that they receive a "second‑to‑none" standard of care from admission to discharge. You will work closely with other consultants, resident doctors, and multi‑disciplinary teams to ensure patient pathways operate unhindered.

Main duties of the job include:

  • Providing highest‑quality care to patients, prioritising safety and dignity.
  • Demonstrating authentic, confident leadership.
  • In‑depth teaching and training of under/postgraduates and supervising Resident and Specialty Doctors.
  • Positive/active engagement in departmental governance and improvement.
  • Effective liaison with all operational, clinical and support teams across the service.
  • Constructive participation in audit and quality assurance processes.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Training (Essential)
  • Full GMC Registration (with licence to practice)
  • CCT Specialist Registration or will obtain within 6 months of interview date
  • Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), IELTS or graduate of a UK Medical School
  • CESR
Qualifications & Training (Desirable)
  • Distinctions, scholarships, prizes
  • Other degrees, e.g. BSc, MSc, MD
  • At least three years in Higher Training in Acute Medicine or other medical specialty
  • ALS
Knowledge and Experience (Essential)
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need
  • Ability to supervise multi‑disciplinary teams
Knowledge and Experience (Desirable)
  • Evidence of innovative development and implementation of guidance
  • Evidence of involving patients in practice. Active interest in IT
Specific Skills (Essential)
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the department
  • Ability to demonstrate familiarity with and understanding of NHS structures, management and current political issues, including awareness of national strategic plans and constraints
  • Ability to demonstrate willingness to lead clinical teams and develop an effective specialist clinical service
