Job description
Consultant Biomedical Scientist – Cervical Cytology

The Cervical Cytology department at Manchester University Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Biomedical Scientist to join our team. The department is UKAS‑accredited and IBMS‑approved for training, processes approximately 470,000 requests per year and produces roughly 70,000 cervical cytology slides using the Hologic ThinPrep LBC system. The position contributes to quality improvement and research activities within the cervical screening programme.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate as part of the consultant team in cervical cytology, authorising reports and providing clinical management recommendations.
  • Participate in cervical cytology mismatch multidisciplinary meetings (MDT).
  • Act as a member of the departmental senior management team, offering clinical expertise and strategic direction to improve outcomes for the cervical screening programme.
  • Expedite and expand best practice, implement clinical governance, and deliver improved outcomes for the national screening programme.
Required Qualifications
  • HCPC‑registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • Royal College of Pathologists & Institute of Biomedical Science conjoint Advanced Specialist Diploma in Cervical Cytology.
  • NHSCSP Certificate in Cervical Cytology (or equivalent).
  • Extensive post‑registration experience in cytopathology with evidence of competency and demonstrated capacity to meet national standards for screening workload.
Working Hours & Flexibility

Position available full‑time or part‑time with required flexibility to work within departmental opening hours of 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
