Job description
Overview

The appointees will join with the existing Acute Physicians in the Department of Acute Medicine at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust. Though this primarily post is based at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, cross site work may be required at Peterborough City Hospital. Specialists in Acute Internal Medicine or General Internal Medicine recognised by the EEC are eligible to apply. Appropriate office accommodation, secretarial support and IT support will be provided.

The post holder will work across our Acute Medicine department on the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), the Short Stay Unit and the Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU). The AAU sees, assesses, and treats patients in our acute unselected medical take. Ambulatory care is overseen by a consultant and staffed by specialty doctors and by advanced nurse practitioners. Short Stay Ward receives medical patients likely to be discharged within 72 hours of admission and achieves a high turnover of patients per day.

We are particularly keen to recruit and support candidates willing to develop a clinical leadership role.

Responsibilities
  • Provide a high quality, safe and compassionate care to acutely ill medical patients admitted to our hospital and provide them the best possible experience during their admission.
  • Active participation in Trust Clinical Governance activities, including audit, mortality review, and appraisal process. Ensure data collection and processing undertaken is consistently accurate and timely and complies with the Trust Data Quality Policy and Information Governance procedures.
  • Teaching, training and supervision of doctors, nurses, and students to promote a positive and supportive atmosphere.
  • Maintain a record of Continuous Professional Development (CPD), including Trust Mandatory training process.
  • Engage in regular appraisal process for revalidation purposes.
  • Undertake activities, defined and agreed in Job plan, using adequate leadership skills to contribute to the achievement of the Trust and Department goals.
  • Develop and promote departmental clinical guidelines with colleagues, in line with evidence-based best practice.

We are dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusivity within our workforce and welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, with emphasis on encouraging those from disabled, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities, as well as candidates from our local area.

Benefits
  • Generous annual leave entitlement starting at 27 days and increasing to 29 days after five years of service and 33 days after 10 years of service, in addition to the national Bank Holidays (pro-rata for part time staff).
  • Membership of the NHS Pension Scheme
  • Flexible working opportunities
  • Enhanced hourly rates for unsociable hours (e.g., night shifts, weekends, bank holidays)
  • Opportunities for career development and training
  • Wellbeing support and activities to promote a healthy work environment
  • Access to in-house physiotherapy service
  • On-site canteens offering subsidised meals
  • Subsidised staff parking (currently free)
  • Free Stagecoach Bus Travel to and from work within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
Role Development and Service context

The Trust is committed to developing its acute medical services. We are planning important changes to our urgent care model. Our current Acute Assessment Unit has 19 beds and 8 recliner chairs. We have a 30-bed Short Stay Ward and an Ambulatory Care Unit. Work is in progress to establish Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) services that include medical and surgical assessment, ambulatory care and frailty services. These posts offer a unique opportunity to be involved in planning and developing an integrated SDEC service from an early stage. The department will work closely with primary care and community services to develop better care for patients.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for newly qualified consultants or established consultants with a passion for Acute Medicine and wanting a new challenge. You must be a capable senior decision maker who will support rapid assessment of patients, including post-take ward rounds, streaming to appropriate pathways and commencement of treatment. There is the possibility of a session of specialty work for those with specialist interests. Applicants wishing to work less than full time or to job share are encouraged to apply. Our consultants are required to provide strong clinical leadership and to be available for opinion and advice on any patient within the acute medicine department. Consultants are expected to be based within the clinical area when rostered for direct clinical care programmed activities (PAs).
