Compliance Officer – Defence Export Control & Security

Hybrid working from our Manchester or Basildon office

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled Compliance Officer to join our team, taking strategic responsibility for export control and security compliance across our Navy systems and services. Operating from three key UK locations, this role ensures full adherence to UK Export Control legislation, international treaties, and internal security protocols.

You will be instrumental in safeguarding sensitive defence-related goods, services, and technical data, while maintaining a robust compliance posture across multi-site operations. This is a pivotal role for someone with deep regulatory expertise and a proactive approach to risk management.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Export Control Compliance:

  • Interpret and apply UK Strategic Export Control Regulations and international arms trade agreements (e.g. ITAR, EAR)
  • Manage export licences and authorisations, including SPIRE applications
  • Oversee compliance for transfers of defence goods and dual-use items
  • Conduct internal audits and liaise with regulatory bodies such as ECJU and MoD

Security Screening & Protocols:

  • Implement personnel and visitor screening processes in line with BPSS and government mandates
  • Manage access controls in restricted zones and sensitive environments
  • Coordinate cross-site risk assessments and mitigation strategies

Policies, Training & Incident Management:

  • Develop and maintain tailored policy documentation
  • Deliver staff training on secure handling of defence products and information
  • Investigate incidents and drive corrective actions
  • Maintain compliance registers and support audits and reporting
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Degree in Law, International Trade, Security Studies, or related field
  • Proven experience in export control compliance within defence, engineering, or manufacturing
  • Strong knowledge of UK and international arms trade controls
  • Familiarity with SPIRE and export licensing systems
  • Expertise in personnel security vetting and risk management
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Export Control Practitioner Certification
  • Membership of ICPA or similar
  • Experience with ITAR/EAR and US defence partnerships
  • SC or DV clearance (or eligibility to obtain)
