Overview

Role: Commercial Manager
Location: Birmingham
Pay Rate: £400 - £600 per day (Outside IR35)

Our client, a leading organisation within the Rail Infrastructure sector, is seeking an experienced Commercial Manager to join their team. Reporting to the Senior Commercial Manager, the successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the successful commercial delivery of projects. The role will involve providing both pre- and post-contract commercial support across designated projects, including the management of subcontractors, materials, and direct labour. The Commercial Manager will work closely with Project Managers, Work Package Managers, Key Stakeholders, and Suppliers to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage change control, cost/budget tracking, forecasting, and risk mitigation.
  • Provide contractual and commercial support to Project Managers and Engineering teams.
  • Prepare and contribute to accurate commercial reports, both internally and externally.
  • Maintain compliance with company standards and ensure robust document control.
  • Keep detailed, auditable records in line with contractual requirements.
  • Collaborate with finance, project management, engineering, subcontractors, suppliers, and clients to achieve successful outcomes.
Experience
  • Proven experience as a (Senior) Quantity Surveyor or similar commercial role in rail, construction, or engineering projects.
  • Degree qualified and/or working towards a professional qualification (e.g., RICS, ICES).
  • Strong background in managing direct labour and subcontract costs, assessing variations, forecasting, and measuring progress.
  • Commercially astute with strong negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
  • Confident working independently, especially under cost- or time-critical conditions.
  • Able to communicate effectively and build relationships at all levels, both internally and externally.
