Job description
Overview

The Peritoneal Malignancy Institute is an internationally renowned tertiary service for patients with a rare form of cancer. Patients are admitted from around the country and usually remain in hospital for at least two weeks, so the psychological input is a mix of virtual and in‑person support.

We are looking for a Clinical Psychologist to support patients during this highly emotive time. This includes conducting virtual pre‑admission assessments, pre‑surgery psychological support, face‑to‑face interventions in hospital, and post‑discharge support offered virtually.

The psychology service is one of a kind in the country and, although established for over eight years, it is still growing. We have a well‑resourced research team, and an interest in research and evaluation will be a real benefit.

This is a structured role with plenty of scope to develop and make it your own. It is an 8a post, but we would consider a newly qualified applicant with experience in health psychology on a preceptorship programme.

Work hours are flexible; to fit the team structure we are looking for availability on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The post is professionally managed and supervised by Consultant Clinical Psychologist Nancy Vanderpuye. Please feel free to contact her for an informal chat: Nancy.vanderpuye@hhft.nhs.uk.

Responsibilities
  • Provide high‑quality, specialist clinical psychological service as part of Psychology Services at PMI.
  • Deliver highly specialist (Level 4) psychological assessments and input for patients.
  • Provide virtual interventions before admission, support patients on the ward, and arrange follow‑up virtual appointments after discharge.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team: attend meetings, provide specialist advice and consultation to help ensure that all professionals understand how psychological interventions can manage symptoms and alleviate distress.

Our vision is to provide outstanding care for every patient. Patient care is at the heart of what we do at our three sites: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, and Andover War Memorial Hospital. Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of approximately 600,000 people across Hampshire and parts of West Berkshire.

Our cultural ambition is to place people at the heart of all we do, to foster a sense of belonging, and to promote learning, improvement and excellence.

We provide specialist services to people across the UK and internationally. We are one of only two centres in the UK treating pseudomyxoma peritonei – a rare form of abdominal cancer – and we are leaders in the field of tertiary liver cancer and colorectal cancer.

The trust employs more than 9,000 staff and has a turnover of over £500 million a year. As a Foundation Trust, we are directly accountable to our members through the governors.
