Orthopaedic Clinical Fellowship – Sarcoma and Hip Arthroplasty Surgery

Organisation

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Headington, OX3 7LD, Oxford.

Contract

12‑month fixed term, starting March 2026.

Eligibility

Outstanding surgical candidates with FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent, who will have completed specialist registrar training by appointment and hold full GMC registration.

Responsibilities

The post aims to enable the successful candidate to gain further experience in hip and knee surgery. The post holder will:

  • Conduct clinics, operating lists, ward rounds and assist or manage clinical tasks on behalf of consultants.
  • Participate in the orthopaedic registrar on‑call rota.
  • Resident on‑call 0800‑2030 (1:20)
  • Non‑resident on‑call 2000‑0800 (1:20)
  • Resident on‑call 2000‑0830 (1:20)

During each six‑month period the fellowship will focus on one of the following: revision arthroplasty, soft tissue knee surgery, orthopaedic oncology, or hip arthroscopy. Candidates should indicate two desired areas in the application.

Qualifications
  • Full current GMC registration with a license to practice.
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualifications.
  • FRCS (T & O) or equivalent.
  • Post‑CCT or equivalent by time of appointment.
  • Satisfactory career progression.
Desirable
  • Higher degree (PhD/D Phil, MD, MBA).
  • BSc, MSc, MEd or other postgraduate qualification.
Experience
  • Expected to achieve 18 months hip and knee surgery during specialist training.
  • Understanding of audit, clinical risk management and evidence‑based practice.
  • Understanding of research principles, methodology and ethics, with potential to contribute to research.
  • Leadership, organisational, communication and professional skills suitable for a large teaching hospital.
  • Ability to manage time and tasks, prioritise clinical needs within experience limits.
  • Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate for level of experience.
  • Good note‑keeping, computing and electronic patient record skills.
  • Validated logbook documentation of surgical exposure.
  • Excellent interpersonal and English communication skills.
  • Experience teaching undergraduates and trainees.
  • Experience of clinical governance, audit participation and clinical audit.
Desirable Experience
  • Previous research experience with publications.
  • Evidence of clinical improvement project completion.
  • Academic and research achievements (degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions).
Additional Requirements

Applicants must hold full GMC registration and be prepared for Disclosure and Barring Service checks under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Skilled‑worker visa sponsorship is available where required.
