Job description
Overview

Cover Supervisors are an essential part of the school team. They cover lessons at short notice and, from time to time, take on longer cover assignments. They must confidently deliver lessons across the curriculum (e.g., English, Science, Music, DT) and work with Heads of Departments to ensure sufficient information is provided to make the lesson meaningful for students. The role provides professional and effective support for teaching within any curriculum area, with the aim of delivering quality lessons in a safe environment to improve students’ learning. Support staff contribute to student learning and achievement by providing coverage that supports teacher efficiency and student progress.

To stay informed about developments in key areas, Cover Supervisors should think creatively and constructively to perform tasks in the most effective and time-efficient way.

Responsibilities
  • Register form groups when required.
  • Refer to the daily cover programme and note the subject, lesson, and location where cover is required.
  • Arrive punctually for the beginning of cover lessons and register the teaching group.
  • Supervise the work set and provide appropriate directions to ensure students stay on task.
  • Answer students’ questions about appropriate processes and procedures.
  • Manage the classroom environment, behaviour, and use of resources.
  • Deal with unforeseen circumstances or emergencies immediately.
  • Inform students if homework has been set and report back to subject teachers by written comments and/or personal contact.
  • Shadow Initial Teacher Training (ITT) teachers when requested.
Accountabilities
  • Work effectively to support teaching and learning across all students, contributing to planning, monitoring, assessment, and class management.
  • Work as part of the school team to help meet the school’s aims.
  • Comply with policies, code of practice, and legislation; report concerns to the appropriate person.
  • Use good communication skills to inform, persuade, inspire, and motivate pupils and provide feedback to other professionals and parents as required.
  • Be familiar with and comply with policies relating to child protection, health and safety, security and confidentiality; report concerns to ensure students’ well-being.
  • Contribute to the school’s development and support colleagues and other professionals to fulfil development plans.
  • Undertake training and other learning activities and attend relevant meetings (within contracted hours) to support continuing professional development.
Safeguarding and Eligibility

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants will undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post. This role involves 'regulated activity' with children; the successful applicant will complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) disclosure application. Employment is conditional on the College being satisfied with the DBS result and other checks. The School will also check the Children’s Barred List. It is unlawful to employ anyone barred from working with children. This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974; shortlisted applicants may be asked to declare all convictions and cautions (including those which are spent unless protected under DBS filtering rules) to assess suitability.
