Control & Instrumentation Technician

An established Energy from Waste (ERF) operator is seeking an experienced Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Technician to join its operations team. This is a key hands‑on role supporting the safe, reliable and efficient running of a modern process plant.

The Role

As a C&I Technician, you will be responsible for the maintenance, repair and fault diagnosis of all control and instrumentation systems on site. Working closely with the Control & Instrumentation Engineer and wider engineering team, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring plant availability, safety and environmental compliance.

You will also support contractor activities, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, and respond to plant and equipment breakdowns both during and outside normal working hours.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on control and instrumentation equipment
  • Diagnose faults and carry out effective repairs to minimise downtime
  • Manage instrument calibration activities and maintain accurate calibration records
  • Interpret and work from instrument loop drawings and P&IDs
  • Use the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to log, track and close work orders
  • Assist with contractor supervision and coordination when required
  • Conduct plant inspections, area safety inspections and risk assessments
  • Support environmental, health and safety compliance at all times
  • Provide cover for the C&I Engineer when required
  • Maintain high housekeeping standards across work areas
  • Work flexibly to meet operational demands, including out-of-hours response
Skills & Experience Required
  • Essential:
    • Proven experience in C&I maintenance within a process industry or power generation environment
    • Strong fault-finding and calibration experience on plant instrumentation
    • DCS / SCADA system experience
    • Experience using CMMS systems
    • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Understanding of environmental and health & safety requirements
  • Desirable:
    • Knowledge of CEMS systems
    • Experience working under Safe Systems of Work (PTW)
    • Contractor coordination experience
    • Computer literacy (Outlook, Word, Excel)
Qualifications
  • Essential:
    • Recognised technical qualification such as City & Guilds / NVQ (or equivalent), ideally via a completed apprenticeship
  • Desirable:
    • ONC / HNC in a technical discipline
    • COMPEX 1–4
    • Formal Health & Safety qualifications
    • Full, clean UK driving licence
