Project description

St Andrew’s is looking for a consultant or consultant team to produce the Business Plan as part of the development phase of our project ‘Saving a Church for all Seasons’, which was given a Development Phase pass by the National Lottery Heritage Fund in March 2025.

The Grade I Listed church of St Andrew’s Boreham has been a place of worship and community centre for over 1,000 years. St Andrew’s has significance on both a local and national level, with previously unexplored connections to the Historic Royal Palaces. However, the building requires urgent and major repair to the roof and floor to bring back the north aisle into use, and modernisation and upgrades to ensure its survival and ongoing operation.

Once this is done the church building will be removed from the Heritage At Risk register and be able to be fully utilised as a heritage, worship, and community space, where we will be able to engage people in the unique social history of the church, its connections to the Royal Palace, and its architectural history and significance.

We will be able to expand usage of the building which will not only reach a wider range of people, but secure the long-term future of the church, so it can continue to support the Boreham and surrounding communities for the next 1,000 years.

The repair works are focused to the north aisle of the church where the most urgent work needs to take place. Specifically, these repairs will restore the failing Tudor roof structure. This will not only improve the condition of the church but will allow for the north aisle to be used again and established as a new community space, with the addition of a tea station and accessible toilet.

Alongside this, and to increase the use of the church building and ensure its long-term safety, we will be replacing the failed electrics in the north aisle and upgrading the wider electrical work to ensure it is up to current standards.

Throughout these works there will be opportunities to engage the community in learning about the repairs to the church and specific construction crafts required to repair and preserve historic buildings. This will include Hard Hat Tours, demonstrative workshops and talks about the works as we aim to connect people with the building part of the project.

Our activity programme centres around key aspects of our heritage and provides opportunities to expand usage of the building beyond church services and to the wider community. The programme will increase usage of the church beyond regular services, engage with new audiences and help generate new income streams to help the church continue running beyond the project.
