Job description

Pollard Thomas Edwards is seeking a Building Regulations Principal Designer to act as the designated individual on behalf of PTE under the Building Regulations 2010 (as amended). This is a senior role requiring technical expertise, leadership, and a strong understanding of compliance under the Building Safety Act (BSA).

The purpose of this role is to ensure compliance with building regulations and safety standards across significant building projects, including Higher-Risk Buildings (HRBs). You will manage project documentation, lead teams, and provide strategic input into practice-wide processes related to building safety.

Key Responsibilities
Practice Management
  • Review enquiries for BR PD services, prepare fee bids, and negotiate commissions.
  • Determine and regularly review project resources required.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the practice’s ISO 9001 Quality Management System, ensuring continuous improvement in relation to BSA regulations.
  • Mentor and supervise BR PDs in training.
  • Deliver training on BSA regulations and BR PD responsibilities.
Project Management
  • Maintain day-to-day client interface and ensure scope of service is understood by project teams.
  • Monitor resources, costs, and fee drawdown in line with agreed arrangements.
  • Forecast project needs and advise Partners on resource gaps and solutions.
  • Provide regular project updates and ensure compliance with practice BSA procedures.
Compliance
  • Work in an environment aligned to BS EN ISO 19650 standards.
  • Demonstrate competence in accordance with PAS 8671:2022.
  • Maintain CPD and a Professional Development Plan focused on building safety, fire safety and Building Regulations.
  • Ensure no prior sanctions under relevant legislation (Building Act 1984, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Building Safety Act 2022).
Qualifications & Experience
  • Professional qualification in architecture (ARB registered/equivalent overseas registration) or equivalent in engineering, building surveying, or related discipline.
  • RIBA Principal Designer Register (HRB) or equivalent (preferred but not essential).
  • Minimum 5 years post-qualification experience managing significant building projects, including HRBs.
  • Proven experience managing teams and project documentation.
