Job description

The Estates Hard FM Team plays a vital role in ensuring our hospitals remain safe, compliant, and fit for purpose. We are responsible for the delivery of day-to-day repairs, planned preventative maintenance (PPM), and operational testing across a wide range of building services and equipment throughout the Trust.

We are seeking a highly motivated and versatile Building Fabrication Craftsperson to join our multi-skilled Estates team at Mile End Hospital and Royal London Hospital Retained Estate, providing essential operational maintenance services across the Trust's hospitals and associated sites.

What we're looking for

A flexible and proactive team player with a strong trade background in carpentry and building fabric maintenance, complemented by experience in painting, decorating, and plastering.

Ability to work across multiple sites, demonstrating problem-solving skills, initiative, and a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.

Willingness to participate in the Estates emergency on-call rota, which includes out-of-hours cover across all Barts Health NHS Trust sites.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled tradesperson who takes pride in their work and wishes to make a meaningful contribution to the upkeep and improvement of healthcare environments.

Main duties of the job

This is a varied and rewarding role requiring a strong background in building trades, ideally supported by a recognised carpentry/building services apprenticeship (or equivalent), along with proven post-qualification experience in a complex building services environment.

Key responsibilities will include:

Undertaking a wide range of painting and decorating tasks, including internal and external painting, wallpaper hanging, plastering, patch repairs, surface preparation, and finishing to a high standard.

Carrying out statutory and planned maintenance to ensure compliance with HTMs, HBNs, Health & Safety regulations, ACOPs, and Trust policies.

Skilled use of woodworking machinery and hand tools for the manufacture and repair of windows, doors, and access frames.

Installation of stud partitioning, ceilings, and other building fabric structures.

Maintenance and repair of building elements and associated equipment using timber, laminates, plastics, composites, and other suitable materials.

Delivering safe, immediate, and effective repairs to the building fabric with minimal supervision, while adhering to statutory obligations and operational specifications.

Qualifications
  • To have served a recognised Apprenticeship. (To City & Guild 236/NVQ level 3 standard/ BTEC/ONC or equivalent).
  • Qualified with Building Fabrication ONC/HNC and or HND level of education and or equivalent qualification.
  • Competent Person Confined Space Certificate, as defined by the latest HSE Confined Spaces Regulation.
Experience
  • In-depth relevant experience of NHS hospital environment or similar establishments.
  • Experience of building maintenance and systems.
  • Experience to follow detailed building drawings and specifications.
  • In depth experience of healthcare building fabrication services and to lead on the maintenance of the building fabrication team.
  • Detailed working knowledge of preventative and reactive building fabrication maintenance and associated HTM.
  • Experience of lone working.
  • Knowledge of information systems for the management of maintenance activity (Concept CAFM System).
  • Experience of successfully leading a building fabrication team and contractors to meet agreed outcomes.
  • Understanding Standing Financial Instructions in relation to procurement and commissioning of external contracting services.
Knowledge
  • Good knowledge of H&S Legislation and some knowledge of COSHH.
  • Working knowledge of H&S Legislation and hospital specifics (HTM's).
  • Knowledge of Access Control Systems.
  • Able to use IT for reporting and maintaining records.
  • Ability to communicate in written and oral form.
  • Knowledge of hospital Health Building Notifications (HBN).
