Overview

A vacancy at Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust for a highly specialist Dysphagia SLT with a special interest in supporting colleagues to develop. The role offers a chance to contribute to the latest development and research in SLT and to promote and share good practice with SLT colleagues and partners. The post is for a dynamic Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly and forward-thinking community team, acting as a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist supporting training needs and holding a clinical caseload. The successful candidate will oversee, supervise and support the ongoing training needs in the area of Dysphagia, including supervision of SLT students and placements.

To contribute to identifying training needs of team members and other professionals and to deliver training in the highly specialist area. To take delegated responsibility for ensuring high‑quality post‑registration paediatric dysphagia training and competence across the city, in conjunction with the Advanced Specialists and Professional Lead. To be the lead clinician for the education of clinical SLT staff and students in the area of Dysphagia. To provide Speech and Language Therapy at a highly specialist level, working in partnership with other agencies and disciplines to support holistic assessment, diagnosis and intervention for children and young people known to the service.

Responsibilities
  • Identify training needs of team members and other professionals and deliver training in the highly specialist area.
  • Take delegated responsibility for ensuring high‑quality dysphagia training and competence across the city.
  • Act as the lead clinician for the education of clinical SLT staff and students in Dysphagia.
  • Provide highly specialist SLT services, coordinating with other agencies and disciplines for assessment, diagnosis and intervention for children and young people in the service.
  • Organise and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training and ensure competency attainment.
  • Keep abreast of national training agendas (AHP workforce, Apprenticeship programmes, RCSLT developments) to inform training plans.
  • Develop links with Professional Education and Development, Health Education England (HEE) HEI partners, and RCSLT.
  • Carry out specialist assessments and develop programmes of care and treatment tailored to clients and families within agreed pathways.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team colleagues and carers on case management of complex cases and make appropriate referrals as needed.
  • Use specialist knowledge and clinical data analysis to contribute to service delivery and provide evidence for clinical outcomes.
