Job Overview
An experienced Band 5 Staff Nurse is needed to join the 15‑bed inpatient unit at Woodlands Hospice, Aintree University Hospital site. The successful candidate will work closely with Ward Manager, Deputy Ward Manager and Senior Nurses to deliver high quality specialist palliative care and symptom control with psychological support to patients and families.
Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive assessment of patients’ nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health needs and complexity for patients requiring specialist palliative care.
- Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records.
- Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care.
- Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to meet patients’ needs, especially in relation to discharge planning.
- Safely administer medicines, infusions and blood transfusions as prescribed.
- Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers/relatives including sharing sensitive news.
- Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
- Act as a link nurse and resource for other nursing staff for a specific area of patient care.
Qualifications
- Registered nurse with current NMC registration (essential).
- Diploma in Nursing (essential).
Desirable Qualifications
- Mentorship/teaching qualification.
- Post‑registration qualification in a relevant specialty.
Experience
- Post‑registration experience with successful completion of Band 5 foundation gateway competencies (essential).
- Experience within a relevant clinical setting (essential).
- Evidence of working with students and maintaining a clinical learning environment (essential).
- Recent acute hospital experience, including as a student nurse (desirable).
Skills
- Ability to organise workload and delegate tasks appropriately.
- Ability to work as part of a team and support less experienced staff.
- Problem‑solving skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Skills
- Basic IT skills, including e‑mail and word processing.

Salary: £31,049 – £37,796 per annum (Band 5, Permanent, Full time – 34.5 hours per week).
